42a Chap. 15. An Expofitionupon the Book of JOB, Ver 3 isnot made topunifhor to condemn a righteous man, though it be fet to guideand order the converfation of a righteous man.; But the law is made for the wicked, they havecaufe to fearall the terroursof it, and God will at Taft openthe treafuryofhis wrath, and bringout all the weapons of his indignation that lye there, and hike them thorow. Now, if theSaints fear not the threat- nitg of the law, what need they fear any thing ? Otherparts of the word are fulloftheir confolations: Tea, wharfoever waswrit_ denheretofore, was writtenfor theirlearning, that they through pati- enceand comfort ofthe Scripture might havehope, and fo ref} their fouls fweetly in the arms of God, as in the arms ofa tender fa- ther. Why fhould they be afraid of any evil fromGod,whohath promifed them fo much good ? yea, that allfhall work, together for good to them : Maynot this make any good man fay confidently,I will do my duty, come on it what will : What can comeof it but good? becaufe theLord hath faid all fhall work together for good; though haply I Ihall have: crofs, it will be good ; though the Lord leave me to thecruel dealings of men, it will be good. But efpecially while we look up and confider what Jefus Chrift bath done, what`Chriff hathfuftered, whatChrift bath underta- ken and Rands engaged in on their behalf, theymaywell put them- felves uponGod, and appeal notonly to hismercy, but Rand to the utmoft of his juftice.. They may expert hard meafure from men (arid the belt is they can do well enough let men do their worft) but as for all the hard meafure they fhall receive from God, Idare (as we fay in our commonfpeech) excasje themfor apenny ; I may fay to any uprightand faithful foul, fuch ari one as job was, Go on, letcome on it what will, I will bear all the chitlings, yea,all the fmart thouIhalt ever hear or feel fromGod. pb having by thefe arguments, taken from theexcellency of God, and his friends bafenefs, prepared their minds to attenti- on,and taken upon him a refolution to fpeak, fpeaks home in the next words, wherefo' c do I toemyfdefh ;nmy teeth,. &c.
