Chap, 13. AnExpoftion upon the Bookof Jos. Verf, 15. truft : What hath God wrought ? and what cannot God work ? Heworks without, and heworks within, he flops or moves all the wheelsof all creatures as feemethbelt to him. The tongues, the hands, the hearts, the wits, the aaeftions, the love, the ha- tred, theanger, the delires ofall the Eons of men areunder his power, and at his difpofe. Who would not truft inGod ? Fiftly, If we look upon our felves as creatures, and all crea- tnres with our felves, we (hall quickly find a necefïity of truft- in; God. As creatures are not of themfelves, fo not in them- felves. VVe receive life from God, and in him we live. If we depart fomm him in whom we live, we (hall furely die. Ourna- tural, as well as our fpiritual life, is preferv.dby the power of God. The life of man confifteth not in the abundance of that which he potfeffeth, but in dependence upon him in whom he believeth. Man is not fufficient of himfelf (in fpirituals) to think a good thought, that fuflciency is of Gods and all tempo- ral good things are not fufficient for man, their fufficiency is of God. A horfe is a vain thing to fave a man, bread is a vain thing to ftrengthena man ; wine is a vain thing to cheara man, yea, wifdom is a vain thing to counfel a man, without God. As there is nothing which the devil doth more oppofe, or God more re- . quire, fo there is nothing whichwe more need, orlywhichwe gain more thenby trailing God .: God gives himfelf moil out to us when we truft moll in him- As an alt of trufl gives moll glory to God, fo it fetchethmolt .good from God. Our truff- ing in creatures makes them vain to us; and our not trufting in God makes him (in a fence) vain tous ; that is, God will not give out his llrength and help,if we donot truft him : he is as one weak whenwe trait himweakly, he isas one empty-handed when our hearts areempty of trait. For the advancement of this grace of truth, take there three rules fromwhat we find in Job, whofe quawas rifen to fuck a height, that it did not onlylive, but was lively in theveryap- proaches ofdeath. Firft, Labour to know God. Job was a man acquainted with God, and therefore he trotted in God (Pfet. 9. To. } They that know thy Name will trujf in thee. The reafon why God is trafted fo little, is becaufe he is fo little known. VVe fayof forcemen, They are better known than trufled, and ifwe knewfume mengore, we fhauld truft them left : But the truth is, God is alwayes I i l 2 truflti a
