Chap. 14 11n Expofition upon the I3ookofJos . Verfe z; uncertain to us, yet their end -is certaintydetermined. Now if the daies of man are few, compared with what they once were, or might have been upon the Earth ; -how few are they in comparifonofwhat they fhall be when he fhall be rraif¢r. out of the Earth ? Then the daies of mans life, whether inheaven or hell, in happinefs or in mifery, (hall be as many as the daies; or rather as long as the day ofeternity. Again, As the daies ofMan are few, compared with what he oncehad and fhall have,fo they are fewefé of all , compared with the daies ofGod, fo few, that as his daies cannot be counted be- caufe they are fo many,fo ours can hardly becounted beçaufe the are fo few.Davidwho found out a dimentton (a hand-breadth: for the daies of man, confidered abfolutely or in themfelyes, could find out no dimention little enough for the daies of man com- paredwithGod ( Pfal, 3 9.5 .) Mine age (and his Age may be the meafure of everymans Age, Mine age, (faith he) is as nothing before him. All time is as nothing, compared with eternity, what a nothing then is the Age ofone man to eternity, which is fcarce any thing to all time ? Some things created and finite are fo great aboveothers, that they are nothing to them : What is the Ant to the Elephant, or the Shrimp to . the Whale? What is the wholebody of the earth, to theBody of the Heavens ?Natura- lifls fay 'tis but a Point, Now ifone creature be fo farexceeded by another creature, that it is fcarce difcernable, how indifcernr able areall creatures to the Creator, finite to Infinite? As one part of the earth is buta Point to the whole, and the whole earth but a Point to the IÏeavens,fo one part of time is but :a moment to all time, and all time is but a moment to eternity, efpeçiai- ty to the eternityof God : which is not only as fome creatures (by his difpenfation ) fhall have, an Eternity forwards , but an as no Creature is ina capability or pohbility to have, an Eternity backwards; and yet in férie fenfe, there is nei- ther forwards nor backwards, neither pail nor to come in Gods eternity His being confisits in one eternal Now, or I ám, . and hath nothing to do with, I was, or f'hall be ; and . therefore the Age ofman is nothing before him ; for mans Age though it be as nothing, undivided, is yet divided, intopail, prefenr, and to come. Three nothings, which being added together amount in the totalfumme to this nothingofthe age anddaies ofman (as David fpeaks) before God. Hence
