Chap. r4. AnExpofitionupon the Book ofJpB. Veri . 569 opian is alfo-anEthiopian : Our Fatherwas an Amorite and fo arewe. The natural confhitution of every thing is tranfmitted by natural generation, man ishimfelf unclean, and all his iffue is likehimfelf, God created man pure in his own likencffe after his image, and man begets man impure in his own likeneffe áfer his image. There are two things in this uncleanneffe. Firft , There is a privation of that comelineffe and beauty , whichwas flampt upon man in his creation:Some define Original uncleanneffe to be onlya privation of original righteonfnefs and that it is one part ofit, all agree, but there is fomething pofitive -in it'too ; for it is as ifa manwho is richly cloathed , excellently :adorned, fhould not only have all his goodly Garments pulled off) whichwerean abatement to him) but fhould be thrown into the dirt, or have dirt call upon him ; yofeph.t brethen took` offhis party-colouredgarment, and then threw him into a pit ;, fodoth fin : That ftrips us firft of our godly array our original righteoufneffe and then drenches or daubs us rather all over, or over headand ears in mire and filth, There'arefeven confiderable properties in this natural unclean- neffe. Firft, It is an Internal uncleanneffe, a fpot upon the garment is bad enough, a fpot upon the face is far work, but an infection in the flefh is yet worfe, and that is worft of all which is feated in the bowels,, or hash feized on the vitals : the uncleanneffe here fpoken of is not as a fpot upon the garment, or dirt upon the face, but a fore in the flefh, (a foar is nothing but the un- cleanneffe of the fllthgathered to a head) yea, it is like a foar in the bowels or intrals, in the heart or liver : foreven the mind. andcoyfciente is defiled, Tit. i.x,5. Secondly, It is an abiding uncleanneffe, all the water in the Oceancannot wafh it out, all the fire in Hell cannot burn it out, Hell fire thall never confume this droffe; Though wicked men in this life be caft into the fire ofGods judgments, and hekindle it with the bellows of his wrath, yet their droffe remains, re- probatefilverlhall men call them,(Jer,6, 3o.) theywill not be pur- gedin this life, and in the next life they fhall notbe purged.l hey thall be forever inpunitive fames, but they fhall not finde ( as Papiftsdream) any purgative flames. The'corruptionof nature w;tl depart from them. The uncleanneffe' of the Mettal is the Dddd dr,iíe
