Chap.' 6. AnExpof>ìion upon the Book of1-O$. iferGfl. 259 credit, the worfhip and fervice which they had among men. Indeed they who deny the true God, his due honour and wor- fhip, do what they can to famifh, or make him lean;and when the true God ( as he hath done by the Preachingof the Gof- pel ) turns men from Idols to lerve , and worfhip him the li- ving God, then he famitheth thofe Gods : When Idols tote their e(teem, theirleannefs rifeth up,and they go down. Thus allo it is with man, his leannefs may be Paid to rife when his credit falls. Further, There isa twofold leannef . Pirft, Of the foul, or inward man. Secondly, Of the body, or outward man. When the Jews lofted in the Wildernefs , and called for flefh to fatistie the flefh s God (faith the Text , Pfal:ro6. r5. gave them their requeff, but font leannefr into theirfoul. The foul in a proper fenfe,is neither fat nor lean, and therefore the foul in this place of the Pfalm, mutt be taken improperiy,or el the leannefsofit mull. The foul is put improperly for the body, or for the whole man,and fo,be font leannefs into their fouls, is, the curieof God caufed them to pine feeretly , or, heflew the fattefl ofthem (openly) and[mote down the chosen men inlfra- el : So this leannefs is expounded, Pfal.78.3 r. as if he had laid, God made them a thin and a lean company before he had done with them. Yet befides this ( I conceive ) the Text Both intend fome fpiritual Judgment , and then the foul is taken in a proper fence , but leannefs in an improper fence : and fo, he fent leannefs into their fouls, is while they inordinately defired meat for theirbodies, God withheld the ordinary food of their fouls : He did not adminifter his Grace and holy Spirit ( which are the fatners of the foul) while they were thus hungry after dainties for the flefh, yob's friends thought him a lean foul , but he here confeffes the leanrefs of his body, and in that his continuaH'orrow the caul of it. So the Prophet cries out, My leannefs, my leannefs, wo unto me, Ifa.24., 16. My leannefs (rif n up.) Fatnefs rifeth úp ', andnot leannefs ; when a man grows lean,.his flesh falls, and abates , skin and bone Aids together, L 1 a VJhy.
