The wicked fhallfee it and begrieved, hefhallgnafh withhis teeth , andmelt away ; the defire of the wicked fhall perifh : But at what was this wicked man grieved, till he gnafhed his teeth ? Was it a griefof com- paffion at the miferyof others ? No, it was a grief of envy at the profperity of others , as is clear from the words immedi- ately foregoing. The horn ofthe righteous (hall be exalted with honour : Envy is the vexation anddeprelfïon of our own ipi- rits, at the exaltation of another man in riches or in honour. It is nota ficknefs catcht from another mans difeafe, but a licknefs catcht from another mans health. Secondly, Gnashingof the teeth, notes extreme derifion, or higheft contempt and infultation over a man in mifery ( Pfal 35 15, 16. ) But inmine adverfity they rejoyced,and ga- thered themfelves together ( that is , the gathered themfelves together for joy, or to rejoyce ) yea, the very abjeels gathered themfelves together fuch as all honest , or civil men had call out of their company and fociety , affociated and knotted them- felves in companies) againft me, they did tear me ) that is , my good name) and ceaJéd not ; with Hypocriticalmockers at feaffs, theygnafhed upon me with their teeth Where it is alto obfer vable, that we have the former aa complainedof by lob, joy- ned with this, Tearing, with gnafhingof the teeth. Thirdly , Gnafhing of the teeth is the effe6 of extreme pain., thus the damned in Hell null gnath their teeth for e- ver (Matto.$. r 2.Matth.13. 42. ) That gnashingof teeth ari feth from a mixed paffion,partly fromenvy, and partly from forrow,envyat the good which the Saints enjoy, and forrow at the evil which themfelves feel ; hence comes gnathing of teeth in Hell, Fourthly, Gnafhing of teeth is an argument of extreme wrath and anger (Ails 7.54.) where it is laid of Stevens at once Auditors and Enemies , When they heard chofe things, they were cut to the heart ( Pears Auditors, Ails 2.were pricks at the heart with godly forrow, Stevens Auditors were cut to their heart withungodly anger)andtheygnafhedtstrrt himwith their teeth, Thegnathing of teeth here fpokenof, is the con commitant offuppofed wrath, He teareth meinhit wrath , and gnaJheth uponme with his teeth.
