Chap.'6. AnExpofition upon the Book of JO B. \Petra2. 289 fìnners.would break the Law in funder, or pull it all in pie' cgs : They have made void the Lazy, Pfal, i 19.4s if theywould not only fin againft the Law, but finaway the Law, not on, ly withdraw themfelves from the obedience of it but drive it out of the world ; they would make void and repeal the hot ly adsofGod, that their own wicked as might not be que- ílioned; and lets the Law thould have a power to punifh them, they will deny it a power to rule them; that's the force of the fimple word here ufed, as applyed to highefi tranfgref ing againft the Law of God. Now as wicked men by finning, would batter the Law to pieces, fo God byafflióing doth fometimes break g000d men to pieces. Confider what courfe ufage the holy Law of God bath in the hearts and lives of wicked men : O how they tear it and vex it, and batter it every day : Thus doth the Lord deal with many cifhis holyfervants who(had they their with) would not make the leaft breach in the Law, andwhole hearts are often broken with godly forrow, becaufe they cannot but break it, yet to thefe hedoth not only give a bruife or a blow but breaks them afunder. There is yet another elegancy in the fgnification of the Word : For as Hebricians obferve, it notes a bruifing, like that ofGrapes, or Olives, which are trodden in a prefs, to make Wine or Oyl ; hence alfo a Noun from this Verb Lignifies the Wine-prefs , Ifa. 63:. 3.: Now Grapes and Olives be- eonfraausluxe ing trodden , are broken and bruited in pieces ; not only tut ,/, is their form and beauty totally fpoiled, but all their fweet (diva in tact nefs, juyce;and liquor is wrought out of them , and they are ¡al. left as a dry lump. Now look what Grapes and Olives are, when taken out of the preis ; even fuch a lump was 7ob;he was broken at funder in the WinePrefs, though not ofGods wrath,, as his Friends mif - judged, yet in theWinvprefs ofhis chattifements and fevereft trials ; all his worldly moyfture was fqueezed out, and his earthly glory was quite defaced, he had nothing -. left of that, but (an,it were) a dry husk ; yet his fpiritual eftate was (till: juicy, and his foul by thefe preffings, treadings, . and breakings, had diftilled much tweet Oyl and Wine, and muchmore was fill remaining in him.
