tjhap.17. 11`n Expofition upott the Book, of J OB. Ver.3. 4.27 by the Prophet Jeremiah, Chap. 23, zr. by that very word which Job ufeth in this place,For who is tdsic., that engageth hit heart to approach unto me, faith the Lord? The Jews had been long under the Babylonianyoak, and their Governours were either, ttrangers, or appointed by ftrangers. But the Lord proinifed in this Vcrfe, that theirNobles fhouldbe of themfelves, and that their Governour fhouldproceedfrom the miditt of them: Which was verified, when God turned their Captivity as Ri- vers in the South, and railed up Zerubbabel, and others of the Jewit}i Line,to reaffatne the Government of Judab, But this Prophetic was chiefly intended and verified in a Spiritual fenfe, when God Pent Jefas Chrift, A Governour, proceeding from the mid(' ofthem( ofwhom Zerubbabel was but a type) ,forof him the Lord fpealts chiefly in this admiring Q eftion, Who isthis,,that engagetb hie besrt to approach unto me? 0r who is this that with his heart ( that is, with fo much cheare fulnefs and willingnefs) hath put himfelfas a furety for this people with me, to approach to me in their caufe, and to take upon him the difpatch'ofail their affairs, and'Concern- -ments with me, in the Court ofheaven ? Who it thisgreat, this forward Engager, but hewho alfofaid,Loe, I come to do thy will, O God ? What will came he to do'? Even this Tobe a Sure- ty, and fo a Sacrifice to God for`lnners, Heb,ro. Thus the whole bufinefs of our deliverance, and the firft motions to it, lay-quite without us. God appointed and put in Chrift our Surety with him, and Chrift freely condefcended to be our Surety, knowing that the whole debt mutt lye upon his dif- charge': Put me in afurety with thee.. , But here it may be doubted , how this notion of Surety, fuits with this place, teeing Jobs controverfie tvas With man, not with God ; and hiinfelfalfo had .profeffcd that all was clear for hinkin heaven. I anfwer, That although men acculed f ob, yet their 'accu. fation reacht his peace with God, for had he been filch a one as they prefented him, he mutt needs have' fallen under the di- -vine difplealure, more thenhe did 'Under theirs. And there- fore whilehe-pleadedNotguìlt, to their charge, he begs fur- ther Difcoireriesofthe favour ofGod' to hibi`t'hrozìgh the Me- diatour, by the remembrance of whole Suretifhp his heart was confirmed in the pardon ofall his linful failings againft Iii 2 God,
