Chap.r7. An Expofition upon the Book ofJ OB, Verf,6. 445 j O B, Chap. 17. Vèrf. 6, 7. He bath made me alfo a by -wordof the people , and afore.time I was as a íTábret. Mine eye alfa is dim by reafonof furrow, andall mymembers are as aJbadow. IN there two Verfes, Job repeats and aggravates his affliai- Lon ; and he doth it ( as he had done before) by chewing the effcás of his afieition. We judgeofcaufes by the effeds, that which produceth a great effet , mutt' needs have a great- nefs ofcaufality in it. Two effeas of his affli%inn are laid down in this Context, The first tells us what his afflif,}ions wrought in others. The fecond, what it wrought upon himfelf. What his affliaion wrought in others, is let forth , Verfe 6. He was become the talkofall, pofJìbly, the[port ofnot a few. The Argument Rands thus. That is a verygreat aflielion, which every man freaks of; or which makes a man a by-word. Butfuch is my affi!ifiion, everyone talks of it, andI am made a by-word ofthepeople; Therefore my afielion is very great, What his affliáion wrought upon himfelf, is expreffed in the feventh Verfe. Dimnefs in his eye, and weaknefs in his whole boäy, Mine eye alfa is dim, by reafon offurrow , and all my members are as aJhadow. The Argument may be formed thus. That is agreat afficll 'can, tbeforrohus whereof `dims the eyes, and macerate all the members of the bodÿ. But fucb is thefarrow ofmyaffíüiion, that my very eyes are dim, and all my members are macerated; therefore mine is a great affliction. Asit he had laid, Shouldl bold mypeace ándfil down in ft.. lence, yetmydim eyes anddryed bones, mywithered skin and crip- `rd limbs, are asfo many tongues,ÿea trumpets,to fpeak, andfpeak ooloud, thefarrows ofmy beart, and thefuferings ofmy outward i*an.This feems to be Job's fcope in the words nowunderhand.
