zoo Chap. 19. e4n Expofitionupon theBook of J o B. Verf.St Secondly, Nor can we underftand it of the fecond ; It was not heavenly, or eternal! glory, ?ob had not vet put on that cloathing, and therefore he could not be ftripped ofit. Therefore we are to reftraine it to the third fort, Earthly glory. And earthly glory may be taken Firft, Stri:tly, for that which we call fame, or renowne in the world. Secondly, We may take glory more generally, for that thing whatfoever it is which gets. us fame or glory in the world; that which gives any man preheminence above other men, that's his glory. Therefore the mercy of God is called his glory ( Rom. 3. a3.) becaufe it renders him fo glorious ; And for that reafon the pang over a tranrgreffjon is called the glory of a man (Troy. 19 I I . ) Hence all() the Woman is called thegloryof man, ( Cor. a i.7.) The man ( faith the Apoftle ) is the imageandglory ofGod, bat the woman is thegloryof the man. But is not the womanalto the image and glory of God ? The woman may be confidered either firft according to her fpecifi- call nature, and fo thee was created according to the image of God inrighteoufneffe and holineffe, as well as the man ; or fe- condly, according to her fex and perfonal relation to her huf- band, and in that regard, the woman is not the image ofGod but the man, becaufe dominion ( which is the mans priviledge) isthe imageofGod, and not fubjecftion, which is the womans du- ty ( Eph. 5. 24.) And in this fence the woman ( though her Glorybe inferior to the mans) is the Glory of the man ; for if the fubje&ion of the irrational creatures unto man, be his glory, or honour ; then what an honour, what a glory is it for man to have fo excellent acreatureas the woman, a creature endued with reafon, as himfelfe is, fubje& to him ? Hence upon the fame common ground, Civil! power, rule, and authoritie a- mong men, are called the Glory of a man, and fo alto are worldly riches and fubftance, becaufe they occafion mans . efteeme, andput a kinde of glory upon him in the world. In this language the fonnes of Laban complaine envioufly of facob,( Gen. 3i. a.) And he heard the words of Labans fonnes, faying, f acob bath taken away all that was oar fathers, andofthat whichwas ourfathers bath hegottenall this glory ; That is, all this - fubltance and riches, his flocks and beards of cattell, hebath `e.Intiera
