Chap. t9. rffn expofition upon the Book, of J o B. Vert: 9. 201 feathered his ríefl well out ofour fathers ellate ; this theycall his glory. 7ofephgives charge to his brethren (Gen. 45. 13. ) to make report to his father how it was with him ; Tell him (faith he ) of all ry glory in t./Egypt ; That is, let him know , how much I am enriched and advanced, being made, by the good hand of God with me , A father to Phareah, anda ruler overall the land of Egypt. 7ofeph would have this told his father, out ofaffeeti. on CO comfort him, not out ofambition toexalt himfelfe. 7ofeph did not vainely fpread his plumes like Haman, who in a kinde of fate- admiration, or in an extafie of Fide called for his fiends, and ZereJh his wife, as Toone as he came from Court, and told them of the Glory ofhis richer, and the multitude of his children, and all the things, wherein the King hadpromoted him, and how be had advanced him above the Princes and ferveents of the King. Such promotion and advancement is the brighteftYhineofearthly glory, and whatfoever makes us Thine with any brightneffe, is our glory here on earth. Hence likewifechildren arecalled their fathers glory. So that place is expounded (Hofea 9. i r .) Asfor Ephraim, theirglory fhallflieaway likea bird, from thebirth, and from the womb, andfrom the conception. The glory of Ephraim, confifted in their numerous off-fpring, according to the prophecie of 7acob ; His feedfhall become a multitude of Nations ( Gen. 4, 19.) thedeparture or rather flight of this glory is fignificantly threatned, when he faith, Their children thall foie likea birdfrom... the birth, andfrom the womb, and from the conception ; That is, either their women Mall bebarren and have no conception, or if they conceive, their infants fhall'fuffer abortion and dye in the wombe, or iftheylive to the birth, they (hall dye as foone as they are borne ; Theirglory fhallflie away. Thefe externall things, as children, riches, power, and places ofauthoritie, are called the glory of a man ; becaufe they ren- der him honourable, and'cloath him( as the oppofite word ftript implyes) with glory in the eyes of men. Under the Law the high Priefis ornaments were called garments for glory and beautie (Exod. 28. z.) And wee may call thofe things which are our gloryour garments. Thefe are as garments. Firft, Becaufe they compaffe and cover us as round as a garment.
