Gratious hearts patterne themfetves in their attention to God, by the attentivneffeof good fervants to their Mailers ( Pfat. 123. t. ) 'Unto thee lift I up mine eyes,0 thou that dzsellefl in the Heavens,behold as the eyes offervants looke to the hands oftheir Maflers, and the eye ofa maiden to the hand of a Mi- ftreje, fo our eyes Waite upon the Lordour God till he bave mercy on us. The fervants eye fhould alwayes be upon his Mailer, and themaidens eye upon her Mifircffe, not onely to hearken what they fay, but to obferve what they doe, and to pick out the meaning ofevery motion and turning of their hand. A fervant fhould alwayes ¡land ready, and fet himfelfe in a pofture of obedience. Beckning with the hand, or a nod with the head, fhould be to him as a wordof command. The Centurion gives that character of a good fervant(Muth. 8.9.) 1have Sotildiers under me,andIfay to one goe,and he goeth, and to another come, and he cometh,and to myfervant doe this,andhe doth it. Here is no mur- murings at, no nor fo much as any the leaft difputing of the orders given. Going and coming and doing, are the heft lan- guage offervants 'tis mofi comely when they fpeak with their feete, and make anfwerwith their hands. The Apofile is much upon this obfequioufneffe of fervants in molt of his Epi ties, ( r Tim. 6. i. ) Let as manyfervantsas are under theyoake,count their owne Maßers wort hie of allhonour, that the name ofGodand bisdetirine be not blafphemed The DoctrineofGod is, that fer- vants should give honour to their Mailers, therefore the do- Brine of God is blafphemed if they doe not ; The Apoftle fpeakes to 'believing fervants, and he preffeth them upon that very account ; They that have believing Mafiers, let not them defpife them becaufe they are brethren. The Apoflle feemes to fay, that föme fervant might thus object, efts my Maf#er is in the faith,fo am I too,what honour doe I owe him ?there is neither 7ew nor gentile, bond, orfree, Wafter norfervant, but in Chrifl we are all one ; It is true faith the Apoftle,yet abufe not this priviledge : ye areall one as to the participation ofGofpel Grace, in the pardon ofyour finnes, and the jollificationof your perfons ; but ye are not all one as to the ¡tare of your relations.
