Chap. i}. An Expoftionupon the L'ookof J O B. Verf.2r. 2E5 den to fee another in afidtion, fpecially if he bath, any rela- tion or nereneffe to us ; therefore he eafethhis owne burden who fhewes pittie to another. Wedoe not alwayes love thofe perfonally whom we pittie. Some fhew pittie onely out of a common inftinet of love to others, and force onely out of love to themfelves. That Judge who neitherfearedGod nor regarded' men,yet after a whilefaidwithin himfelfe, becanfe this widdow trot.- blabme, I will avenge her(that is, doe her jullìce and relieve her) left by her continual) comming Ace weary me ( Luk. 18. 4, 5,) And hence we reade in Scripture of thebowed! of pittie, of the bowel" ofcompaffion, Ifany bowel', and mercies, faith the Apoflle (Phil a. i. ) They who have any bowel's cannot but have fome mer- cies. In the Hebrew and Grceke tongue, the fame word lignifies both bowels and mercy or pittie, because pittie caufeth a fecret motion in the bowels, and afleas the body. The harlots bow- els yenned, when the living child,: was to be divided (o King. 3. 26. ). The pittie of Godhimfelfe is called the movingor found- ing of his bowels ; ( Ifa. 63, 15. ) Where is thy zeale, and thy firength the founding ofthy b well and ofthy mercies towards su are they reffraisoed ? The Prophet fpeakes of God in aliufion to man, whole bowels are faid to be ftraitned, when he is ftrait- ned in mercy. When the infriour fenfitive faculties in man, the eye, or the Bare, take in forrowfull fpalacles or reports, thefe goe to our bowels, to our very heart, the ifue and effect whereof is compaflion to thofe, whole forrowes are reported to us. Sometimes the eye carries in a vifion of forrow and mi- fery to the heart ; Mine eye affelleth my heart, faith mourning yeremie, when he law the ruines and defolate condition of 7e- rufalem. Sometimes the eare conveyeth a report of milery to the heart, and then we may fay, the care affee`teth the heart. When wordwas brought to good Nehemiah of the fad affliction and reproach of his brethren, the remnant of the captivitie that were left in the Province, and how the wall of 7erufalem was broken, and the gates thereof burnt with fire, he fat downe, and wept, and mourned certaine dayes (Neh. I. 3'. 4, 5. )his bowels were exceedingly moved. Natural! pittie may doe this. yet that pittie of7eremie and 2V eehemiah was more then natural!. There is betide this a fpirituall pittie, which arifeth out of pure love. There may be pittie ( as was Paid ) where there is no, log. t carr,dy,a,.
