288 Chap, 19. An Expofition upon the Booke of JO B. Verf. :2 I a profeffor of love',' and friendfh p is love not onely profe(fed, but frequently aefed. As many bare profeffions oflove, fo fome one aec of love doth not amount to friendfhip. Everyman would doe himfelfe good often and alwayes. A friend is ano- ther t lfe; fo t llofef defcribes a friend (Deter. t 3.6)) where to thew how impartially the Jewes were to proceed againtt fedu- cers, he ecpreffely forbids any favour to thole who might ei- ther challenge or deferve the greateft favour, whether upon na- turall or civil! relations. 1f thybrother thefon of thy Mother, or thyfonor thy daughter, or the wife in thy bofome, or thyfriend ( he feemes to fpeake leffe but indeed he fpeakes more then before, ifthy Friend) that is as thy ownefoule, intice thee fecretly, fayina let to goe andferveother gods, that thouhat not known, thou /halt not content unto him, neither"ball thine eyepittie him,&c. A fpeciall friend is`asour owne foule, and many fpeciall friends are as if they had but one foule. ? onathan and Tavidmoved in the high- eft fphear of friendfhip, hence 'tis Paid of 7onathan, that his /eule was knit with the foule ofDavid, and yohathan loved him as his owne foule, (I Sam. 18. r. ) So that while yob befpeakes thefe men under the title offriends, he moves them by that ar- gument which with molt is the molt preflìng, and which is the moft lotting argument. Afriendfticd'eth clofer then a brother ( Prov. r8. 24.) and whereas man and wife are one flefh ( Matti,. 19. 6.) friend and friend are onefoule. What common humanitie will not doe, what kindredand aliance would not doe, friendfhip hath fometimes done. Have pittie upon me, Oyee myfriends, For the hand oftheL el bath touched me. The handof God is his power, and this is taken two wayes in Scripture. Firft, For his helping, or his prote6 inghand ; which is called thegood hand ofgod, (Ifa. 8. 18.) And by the good hand of God upon eu, they brought to aman ofunderflanding. So Ezr. 8. 18. Then ftold them ofthe hand ofmyGod which was good upon me; That is, to helpe or todoe me good. Secondly,
