Thus Naomi fpake when ¡bee was become Mara;The handofGod isgone out againft me(Ruth t. r 3 .) We have variety of expreffions ufed in Scripture in reference to the punifhing and aflli Ling hand ofGod. As firft, to lay the hand, Exod. 7. 4. And Pharaoh(hall not harken untoyou,that Imay laymy hand upon e.Egypt, and bring forthmine Armies. Secondly, To lift up the hand (Ifa. 26. i r .) when thy hand is liftedup (to (mite thine enemies, and deliver thy people ) they will not fee. They had eyes to fee, but they had no hearts no wills to fee what God had done. Thirdly, To [tretch out the hand (Ifa. 9. 12. ) For allthis his anger is not turned away, but bis hand isftretched outftilt. Fourthly, To touchwith the hand, which was opened in the firft and fecond Chapters of this Book; Tutforth thine handnow ( faith Satan to theLord )and touch his done, andhis fielh (v.5. ) lob's bone and Real had felt that touch, and therefore he fpeaks in the fame forme andphrafe ; The hand ofthe Lord bath touches' me. The finger of God is put for his power in Scripture as well as his hand. `Pharoahs Magicians confeffed at laft, The finger of Godis here (Exod. 8. r9.) That is, this plague or punifhment is a demonftrationof a divine power. Some conceive that the wordfinger is thereufed tonote fume fmall part of the power ofGod; and that as the hand is greater then the finger,fo,to fay, Thehand ofGod loath touched me, is more then to fay ,Thefinger of God loath touchedme, or, This is the finger ofgod.Indeed the lit- tle finger of God is more then the whole hand, yea then the loynes ofallCreatures.
