Verf. z5. 319 Secondly, Though his expreffïons in the letter may be fit- ted to that inferior fenfe, yet if we remember what bath been touched more then once in the former paífagesof this Book, we finde that lob had, as it were, difclaimfd all hope of reflo- ring unto any temporall happineffe in this life, affirming that his hope VPAA gone, and that he wes worie then a tree cut downe ofwhich there is hope, that it will grow againe, and put forth tender branches from the root; as for him, as he had no de- fire, fo no expeaation of recovering his farmer beauty and greatneffe, with promifes of which his friends ( upon the fup- pofition of his repentance) had often endeavoured to raife his fpirits and fill his fails. Therefore it feernes altogether im- probable, that he fhould rife to that height ofhope about it in this place, contrary to the current ofall his former difcourfes up- on that point.
