Chap. i9. Expofition upon the Booke of JOB. Verf. 25. 327 thing wouldcome fromhim, anddid h eflily catch it,and theyfaid, thy Brother Benhadad ; They looked upon it as a love token when once he laid, my Brother B.,nhadad. Thus here, my Redeemer, fhewes that lob had much intereft in, and love to the Redeemer, his faith didnot run upon generalls, but was fixed, fet down, and refolved, to live and dye by his living Redeemer. My Redeemer liveth. To live, implyes not onely the prefent being, but the eter- nitie ofthe Redeemer ; As if he had laid, though I am mortal!. and dying, as allo you my friends are, yet my Redeemer liveth ; He faith not, bath or (hall live, but he liveth;he fpeakes ofthe Re- deemers life, without any dittin&ion of time paff or to come, he liveth ; God is for ever, Iam ; Chrift as God liveth from E- ternitie, Chrift as man liveth toEternitie. And as Chrift God- manwas the LombHeinefrom thefoundation of the world in the promífe, and from eternitie in the purpofe and decree of God,, fo Chrift as God-man lived from eternitie in the purpofe of God, and from the foundation of the world in the promife. Chrift is compared in the Gofpel to many thingswithout lifeg to water, to bread, to a tree, to a ftone, to a way, yet every one of them bath the addition of life as he is compared: to them. He is not called (imply, water, but living water, nor fimply bread, but livingbread, fo allo a livingflont, a living way., and the treeof life. Secondly, When befaith, My Redeemer liveth, we mutt look,. on Chrift, not onely as having life, but as the Lord and Prince oflife ( Act, 3. 15. ) Chrift as the Eternall Word bath life in himfelfe ( Joh. i. 4. ) As he is the Son ofman he receiveth life of the Father : For as the Father bath life in himfelfe, fo bath be gi- ven to theSon to have life in himfelfe( Job. 5.26.) and that not as every thingwhich lives bath life in it felfe ; but by way of Eminency, as a 'Prince of life; for, Firft hehash his owne life in his ownedifpofe. Seehow like a Prince he fpeakes of his owne' life ( ?oh. to. r 8.) I have power to lay it downe, and have power to take it again. Secondly, He gives life to others ; the Sonne quickens whom he will, Job. 5.. 2i. As Chrift hath life in himfelfe,, fo he bath life to beftow at his pleafure, or upon whom he pleafeth. Hecame that we might have life(fob. r o. a o.) Heú the life.' Vivir domi7r9,t i. e. arernws e¡#. BruC: Viventem dici,. i. e. aternam dT ir.corruptibi- lís vira ac vir- ttctir. Cuc::
