The old fathers who lived before that fulneffe of time in which Chrift came in the flefh, dyed in this faith, they waited for theMcffias, they looked forand relyed upon the promifed feede. Chrift fpeakes ofthe times as high as Abraham, Abraham faromy day, and wasglad(Joh. 8.) And the Apoftle7ude fpeakes higher ofhim, that Enoch the feventh from Adam prophefied of the commingofJefus Chrift to judge the world, therefore certainly hewas acquainted with the promife of Jefus Chrift ro Rdeeme the world. This adminifters a ftrong confutation ofthe Socinian-here fie ; For ifChrift who was manifefted in our nature in the latter end of the world, was the Redeemer of thofe who lived in the firft ages ofthe world ; thenhe was not a Savi- our onely ( as they affirm) by his word and doftrine, or by the example ofhis life, fufferings and refurteftion ; but by his furl- lice and fatisfaftion. For how could eyther the perfonall teach- ings or example ofChrift reach to, or be conveyed up to them, who lived before him. Fourthly, Learner That, there isbut one Redeemer. (l4) Redeemer ; He fpeakes in the Singular number; One is all, as the Apoftle tellifies (Lfet$4. r z.) Neither is there any name under Heavenwhereby wecan delaved, bat only by theLord yefuc Chrift. Fifthly, Note. We have a living Redeemer. Our Redeemer dyed for us but he lives for ever. Chrift being railed from the dead dyethno more,deathhath nomoredomini- sn over him ( Rom. 6. 9.)
