Chap, i9. An Expofition upon the Bootie of J O B. Verf. z5 of the grav Chrift i is fo much in the refurreftion, that he calls himfelfe the RerurreEtion. When he was going to the grave of (Job. I. he faith Shee anfwred I know brother he rrifela rife at the h I 25.) , k g.. refurreftion at the latter day. Her faith was cleare for the re furre&ion, and Theeexpreffeth the time (as yob in theText ) at the latter day. Chrift approved her confeffìon,yet gives her fur. then inftruftion (ver. 25.) I am the refurreEtioso and the life ; And fo he is, not formally, but caufualiy or virtually, that is, he is the Author of the refurreftion, and that in reference to both natures; Firtt, his Divine nature is the efficient caufe of the refurreftion he (hall raifeour bodies out of the duff, and the duff (hall giveup its prifoners, by the power of his. God- head ; Secondly his humane nature is the exemplary caufe or patterne of the refurreftion ; upon which ground the A- poftle calls Chrift the fir-1i borne from the dead, Col. a. 18. For though fomewere, raifed from the dead before him, yet feeing his refurreftion was the caufe of their refurrection, and will be the caufe of theirs who have been railed, who (hall be railed, therefore he is called the firft-brnefrom the dead.Hence the Apo- file argues the oppofers ofthe refurreftion in the Church ofCo- rinth (a Cor. 15.124 If Chrift In preached that he rofe from the dead, how fay fome an ong you, that there it no refurreEtion ofthe dead ? As if he had laid, Doe but grant this that the body of Chrift is rifen, and you cannot rationally deny a refurre&ion of our bodies, both becaufe his refurreftion is the exemplar ofours, and becaufe Chrift and all beleevers are one myfticall body, he is the head and we the members ; nor indeed is Chrift per- feftly rifen,, till we all rife. For though thrifts perfonall re. furreftton was perfeft when he arofe, and though all beleevers arofe reprefentatively when Chrift arofe yet till all beleevers arife perfonally, the refurre6tion of Chrift h::th not received it's utmoft pertlion. For as though the perfonall Coffering; and afflictions ofChrift in the flefh were'perfec`t,yet till all his mem- bers have fuffered in the flefh, that which God hath appointed as their portion in fufferings ; There is fomewhat behind(as t e Pteo- ftle (peaks, Col. i. 24.) ofthe affliElions ofChrift, which Paul for his part rejoyced tofill up ; fo we may fay, that till all beleevers arife in the flefh, or body, there is fomewhat behinde of the re- furreftion of Chrift. 341
