Chap. i9. An Expofttion upon the Booke of j O B. Verf. 28. death ; Buthad his enemies laid, why doe we perfecute him ? had they looked to their ground ? Chrill ( Lull. z3. 34.) makes their inadvertency the ground of his prayer for them; Father, forgive them, for they know not what they doe. They havenot fayd, whyperfecate we him ? They were relayedbut notadvifed, Cru- cifie him, çrucifie him, downe with him, down with him : It vnufb be fo ; but no true caufe was (hewed why it fhould be fo. Many may fay oftheir finfull wayes according to the letter of the Apofile ( Rom. 7. i 5 ) what we doe we know not. Paulfpeaks of himfelfe as over. powred by corruption ; What 1doe I know not, we tranflate, that which 1doe 1allow not. 'Paul fpeaketh not of his fins of ignorance; or that he had done what was indeed finfull, nor knowing or not being convinced that it was a fin; and therefore we doe not tranflate, Iknow not, as if 'Paul had been in the darke about his own doings ; but, that I doe 1allow not, though I cannot but know that I have done finfully, yet I. doe not favour or take part with any finne that I have done.. When a godly man fins, heaiwayes Both the eviil which he al- lows not : but when ignorant men fin, they doe the evil! which they knownot, and wicked men doe the evil! which they have no minde to know, they cannot endure to confider (as to fin- fulnes) ei ther what they aredoing, or what they have done. The foote offers a facrifice, and Solomon would not have true worfhippers like him Keep thy footewhen thou goeft into the houfe ofGod, and be more readie to heare then to offer thefacrifice of fooles, for they confider not that they 4e evill,(Ecclef. 5. s.) Some by the fupplement ofan adverlative particle, render the Text thus They !¿,nownot but to doe evil!. They do evil) while they doegood, evenwhile they worfhip God, and they cannot doe otherwife. Our rendring is clearer, when they doe evill they confider it not, they care not to be acquaintedwith the evil! which they have done, or they a t at a venture, whether good or whether evili, fall back or fall edge,it never troubles them. Ignorant perfons are fuch holes thatthey know not when they doe evil!, wicked men are fuch fooles that they never confider or regard it when, they have done evili. Secondly, Obferve ; Before we doe any thing wefhould take acccoasnt ofourfelmwhy- we doe it. There are two things we fhould take account ofour felves about. 405
