Verf. 24. He fhallflee from the iron weapon. He 'ball f ee ]Flight is the pace ofa coward. So the word is ufed, all the Scripture over; The wicked man bath no heart for good, and he loath as little againi evill. His fpirit is gone, and a- ttic approach ofdanger his body is going or rather running; his fpirit is fallen from his heart into his heeles; and he defends him- felfe by his feet not by his hands:when the iron weapon comes, the righteous will rather die, then run, ifduty bids them flay but the wicked Shallflee from the iron weapon. The word which we eradiate iron weapon, lignifies all forts Ikb.i denote of hand weapons, or weapons with which we ¡hike at hand, omnegenm 4r- fuch as are the fword, and fpeare. The word properly fgni- °pu, qua ma- fees to falute, or kiffe. And the reafon why thefe kindofarmes fignificat and weapons, are expreft by that word,is, becaufe a mars fights ojculari co qucd with them face to face; and comes near to anadverfary, even as bujufmodi armis if he came to falute or tokiffe him. There are weapons with non n;ft commua which we may fight at a diftance and never come neare our parts antenio- y a rt volt us cui enemy, ejcula infigifco- HeJhallfeefrom the iron weapon] That is, from all forts of lent, femur. band weapons, with which we oppc,íe and finite our affaylants, Poll. or defend our felves. Some interpretthis Iron weapon, not litterally but tropi- cally for the plague, or p.ftilence, or fome deadly difeafe, which according to the languageofScripture, is compared to that iron weapon the fword, or to an arrow (a Chron.2 ì . 27.) when the Angel was Pent to deftroy the People of ?erufalem with the peftilence, after Davidhad numbred them, the Text faith ; The Lordcommanded the Angel, and heput uphid fword againe into the/heath thereof. The pettilence is the fword, and the ftroak of it is like fmiting with the fword. In the nic=ety firft iJalme, that other instrument ofdeath, the Arrow fgnifies the plague. 565
