Chap. 20. ni4'n Expofltion spot the Bookof J o B. Vetl. Z$. 591 In tke day ofhis wrath. Ofwhofe wrath ? In the day ofthe wrath ofGod. That is, whenGod appeares angry, and manifefts his wrath. There is no change in God ; As he is not at all moved by any paffìon, fo that which for our underflanding is expreffed ofhim by a paflion, doth never move. His love and his wrath, his favour and his difpleafure, are fixed from everla fling to everlafling, 'The Scripture calls that a day ofGods wrath, when he puts forth his wrath in the vifible tokens and evidences of it, as that alto is called in Scripture a day of his mercy, and grace, of his patience and long fufferance, when he declares himfe Ile in grace and mercy to his people : fo then, the day ofwrath is that feafon whenfoever it is, wherein nothing but wrath and vifions of amazement appeare towicked men. There is a twofold dayof wrath, a leffer, and a greater. The leffer day ofwrath is here in this world, when judgmeut breaks forth, anddivine anger is Ilamp't upon every former enjoyment. The great day of wrath is in the world tocome. Then wrath (hall be powred out to the utmoft. That will be a day as ofthe revelation of the righteous judgement ofGod toall, fo a dayof the revela- tion of the dreadful( wrath ofGolf to moft,Zophar here intends the former, the leffer day ofwrath. The increafe ofhir bottle jhal! flow away in the day of his wrath. Hence note ; WhenJudgement goesforth, wrath goesforth. There are dayes ofgreat affliftion to the godly, which are not dayes of wrath, but oflove, Whom I love I chafien. There may be a time, when the increafeof a believers houle departs, andall his goodsflow away like a fireame, andyet thatno day ofwrath, but only a day oftryall. Floods oftemptation doe not drowne, but wafh the furniture ofgrace, that increafe of the foule never flowes away. But judgement is ever ming- led with the wrath of God, in the cup of ungodly men: perfonall Judgements are fo, and fo are pubfque judgements : Woe to a provoking people when judgement appeares; for that is the appearance ofwrath, and beares in its face the image of a fiery indignation to confume the Adverfary.
