Chap. 22. An Expofition upon the Book of JOB. Vert. 27. 26y our hearing the wordof God is more then to take in the found or fence ofwhat is fpoken;it is to fubmit to and obey what is fpoken; Now as we heare no more oftheword ofGod, then we beleeve and practice, fo the Lord heareth no moreof what we pray (in a 'Scripture fence )then what he granteth,There are two in Scripture which note this. Firfl,To have regard to a perfon,or to a prayer(' Kings 8 28, 2.9.) when Solomon prayed at the dedicationof the Temple, the Lords hearing ofprayer, which he thenbegged, is thus de ic) ibed, Have thou refptFt unto the prayer ofthy /ervant,and to hisfupplica- tion,&c.that thine tyeo may be open toward thss h.0fe night andday, Reipicere elf So it is laid ofAbel ( Gen. 4.4. ) that the Lord load refpet to kw , ndtre. offering, the Lord looked towards him, and accepted of him ; to accept a prayer, is to heart a prayer. Secondly, The hearingofprayer is defer; bed by the pretence ofGod with thofe that pray. (Ifa. 58.9. ) Then/halt thou call, and the Lord [hall an(wer, thoufhalt cry, andbe (hall/ay,here Iam. This is a wonderfull condefcenfion,'tis even as when a Mager cul- ling to his fervant, heanfwereth, here, Sir, here Iam ; and that is as much as to fay, lam ready toyour command, I am ready to doe thatyou wila' haveme, here 1am i fo faith that promife in the Pro. Adele eft ate - phet, Thou ¡halt cry, and the Lord¡hallfay, bere 1am, that is, 1 am dire. ready todoe what you uke,Iam even ready(OunfpeakeableGood- nes) atyour command(as our tranfl ationof the I t th verte of the the 45th Chapter of Ifaiah, fpeaks out in plaine termer,) or I am milling to doe what you will have me to doe. All which is in effes and ve wally contained in the word of the Text. He 'ball hears thee. This teacheth us, Fir(f, That God io the hearer ofprayer. It is the Lords title, O thou that hearefl prayer-unto thee .(hallall firth come ( faith David, Pfal. 65. 2.)God is not only A hearer of payer, but he is The Hearer ofprayer ;. to heare prayer is his pe- culiar prerogative andprivikdge as well as his goodnes &mercy; none in heaven or earth have a will to hear prayer as God dorh, nor have any aepower to do it. No ',creatures tare is long enough to reach the complaints, nor his flock large enough to fupply the wants ofall his fellow creatures.
