3 50 Chap. a3 . itn xpofition upon the Book of J OB. 6f another moll needful! exhortation, or exhorts them 6rft (v.i o.) to be firong in the Lord, andin the power ofhis might implying, that it is not any one piece, nonor thewhole armour ofGod ab. !Iraaly or precifely tAken,which is our ftrength,but that the God of this Armour is ourltrength in the fpirituall combate. t beuzh erór loynes were girt about with troth, and wehave on the breafl- plate ofrighteoufnefje, though ourfeeiewere fhod with the prepara- tion of the Gofpel of peace, & we have the /hield offaith in our hand; thoughwefhould take the helmet offalvatios, and the (word of the Spirit which is the word ofGod, yet, if thus arrayed, it were )oííì_ ble for us to neglea or forget the God of the Word, it were not poffible for us to conquer, thefootmen,leffer,much h ífß the horfe- men.Greater,leaft ofall,The Chariots ofiron,the greareft tempta- tions of the Princeofdarkneffe.As no carnal! weapon hath any thingat all to do, fo no fpirituall weapon can do any thing at all in this warre without the ftrengthofGod;or rathcr(to conclude this poynt)all thefe fpirituall weapons andArmour are nothing elfe but thearength of God, or the various puttings forth of the ftrengthofGod in weake man. Fifthly and Iaftly, God gives us ftrength to pray to and plead our caufe before him; hewill not dazle us with his glory,norcon- foundus with hisMaefty whenwe come ro plead with him, but he will put ftrength into us. In prayer we prevaile withGod, but the ftrength whereby we prevail with God,comes fromGod; yea he doth not onely give us ftrength in prayer to as by, but he aas that ftrength in prayer. ( Rem. 8. 26.) Likeuire the Spirit helpeth our infirmities : for we know not what we fliould pray for as the ought,but the Spirit itfelfe makethintercefonfor rssâ withgroe- sings which cannot be uttered. Prayer is !iron) worke, it calls forth the whole ftrength ofthe foul,nor doth the o ::l in any thing íhew its ftrength more then in prayer ; praying is wrelíling ., and how can we wreftiewithout strength ? Even the kingof Ninevy gave thisdireaion at his fart ( Yon. 3. 8.) Let then cry mightiy. Andour Lord 7eftu Chrif in the dayesofhis flsyb ffered up pray- ers and fupplie tions withfireng crying and tearer (Heb, 5. 7. ) Now the Spirit is the ftrength`c-fGod in us, for prayer : he help- eth our infirmities, and we are onely a b'ondle ofinfirniities with- out his°helpe. There is a threefold ftrength needfull in prayer, andGod by the Spirit puts thefe three ftrengths intoús. Firft;
