Firft, The hypocrite endeavourstohide and put his wayes out ofthe fight ofGod,asmuch as hecan ; As he bath not the light ofGods countenance,or ofhis favour fhining upon him, (o he de- fires not to have the light of his knowledge fhining into hire, {Ifa. 29. r 7.) tlae Prophet defcribrs fume feeking deepe to bide their Councels from theLord, and their worker are in the darke (both innatural! and moral! darknes) and theyfay, who teeth us, and who knoweth us ? The endeavour ofthe hypocrite is that he may hid. And Secondly, Hecryes all's hid ; as it is his endeavour, that God fhould not, fo it is his hope that God doth not know his wayes, much lette his heart; He is often Pure that men do neither fee nor knew,& he alwayes prefùmes that God doth nor;and therefore as one out ofdoubt he puts his doubts,whoteeth? and who knoweth? Though flafhes offeare come in upon him, fometimes, yet he flatters himfelfe with prefumptious hopes and falfe perfwafions, that God knowerhim not, fees him not; arad that his darke way (hall never be difcovered ; and as in that place of the Prophet, they fpeake indefinitly, thereby inferring that God Both not fee them ; fo we have them in the Pfalme (peaking dived ly that God (hall not. (`Pfal. 94. 5, 6, 7.) They breake inpieces thy people .Lord, andflay the widdow andfiranger, and murther the fatherles jet theyfay, the Lordjhall not fee, neither !ball the godof 66 re.. Bardit ; As if they had Paid, though God fhould let himfelfe to fearch us out,and would never fo faine fee what we are doing,yet he (hall not. We will carry it fo clpfely and cunningly, that the eye of God (hail not reachus. Their workes were fo foule and bloody, that the Sunmight beafhamed to looke upon them, and theywere fo dole that they beleeved Godcould not look upon them, or bring them to (baffle for them. Thirdly, 'Ls a terrorto an hypocrite to remember that God knoweth his wayes. That which yob faith of the wicked in gene- rail, is moil proper to hypocrites ( Chap. 24. 17.) The morning is to them even as thefbadow ofdeath; ifone know them, they are in the terrours ofthe fhadow ofdeath.
