___ Chap. 2.3. An Expofîtion upon the Book of J OB. Ve.rf 12 411 Hence note. FirR,That agodly manbath ahigh eflimationof the wordrf goad. Firft, He doth not only efteem ir, but he efteems it as food. Secondly, He efteems it as neceffarÿ food. Thirdly, He efteems it more then neceffary food. Here are three !ceps, by which his eflimationof the word of God is tobe taken. `David faith ofa godly man (Pfal. 1. 2.) His delight is in the Law ofthe Lord. The word there u'ed figni- fies both will, and delight. Some render it (v-;ltentar) wrli, and o- tlae voluptas) delight.Wemay take in both, hts will a°}d his de- li t is inthe law ofthe Lord, or he delightfullywills it.Would youknow where the delight & joy ofa Godlyman is; it is in the law of the Lord, there'cis fixed, and no where elfe comparatively, but in the Lord of the Law.Thefe two are infeparable,he that de., lights in the Law bath firft delighted in the Lord, and he chat de- lights in the Lord, cannot but delight in the Law. There are two metaphors ufed an Scripture, which fhew the eftimationand de- light which Saints have in the lawof God, or in the word oS his mouth. Firft, As the word is compared tofoe! ; fecondly, as the word is compared to areafure: the word is oftch compared to food, and the molt delicious food (Pfaim.119. 103.) How frneete are thy words unto my tafle, .yeafweeter then honey to my w serh. And ( Pfeil. 19. Io. ) They are fweeter then the honey and the honey- combe : He doth not meane the honey-combe barely,as the veffel wherein the honey is kept, but by the honey-comb he means the honey that flows or drops immediately and (as I may fay) natu- rally without any art, or preffing out of the combe, which is e- fteecned the pureft honey;Iuch is the law of God to the Ipirituall palate ofa Godly man. That feaft(Matth.aa.a. Lt, kt a ¡..1s.) towhich flours are invited,is onely the declarationof the word, and minde of God in the Gofpel.Tbeword ofGrace is thegrea- ceft feaft which Godmakes his people. Againe, the werd is as of- ten compared to treafure : what theefteeme, and delire ofman is to creature, I neednot flay to tell you. The 3udgement of God (faith David, Pfal. 19. 10,) are more to be drfred then Gold, yea then much finegold. And againe (Pfal. 119.72. 127.y The law of thy mouth it better to me then thoufands ofCold andfilvtr. Ggg2, And
