That the promotion, and exaltation of wicked men,is theepprej r - on, and vexation ifpoore men, ofecial/y ofall t f rove god!? men. It is a fad time with poor men, molt of all with peor godly men, when the wicked are cialted. Solomon gives us this note in expreffe terms, (Pro. 28.28.)When the wicked rife (that iq,when they rife in power andauthority) men hide themfelves, that is,good men hide themfelves : poore men hide themfelves when the wic- ked rile, bat waft ofall fuch poor menas aregodly . The digne of wickedmen is the ruine of the godly. Which is more plaine by the oppoficionmade in the tuft claufe of the verte ; When t e wic- kedrife, men hide themfelves,but when they perifll the righte( ea in- creafe. In which Proverb, riling is opposed to perifhing, but men and righteousare the fame, When the wicked pentu, thofe righ- teous men, who before hid themfelves, appeare, and (hew them- felves againe. Some poore men are turbulent,proud,untra &able, feditious, men ofur.quiet fpirits, if Inch be dealt with by juftice, and made to hide themfelvee,they have theirdefert.Buc the poor who are allo humble, meek, andofa quiet fpirir; (as the word here imports) are theaime of thewicked. Such `David femnd in his low effare, and againft them he prayed (pfal. 3 5. 19, 2O. ) ,Let net them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: nei- ther let them winkwith theeye(that is,lec them not have occafion to contemne and defpifeme, of which, winking with the eye was a token) that hate me without a caufe.For they fpeaknot peace,but they devife deceitfull matters againfi them that are quiet in the land.
