54u Chap. 24. .4n Expofirion upon the Bookof JOB. Verf. iz- patience cowards thofe tyrants who oppreffe his ele&, yea and much patience alfo towards his cleft, in regard of their doubts and deipondencies oftheir feare and unbeleefe about his coming to avenge and help them againft thofe Tyrants. Further, Folly imports not only fin, but the greatnefsof fin, fa that when it is Paid, God layeth notfolly to them, the fence (ac- co;ding to this notion of the word folly) is, that, though they fin greatly, yet God makes no great matter of it, or he do:h not charg their fin upon them, nor punifh them fortheir ;in ánfevera- N,nponifiul bly or in proportion to the greatneffe of ir, but paffeth it by, rirarn, i.e. nn as if it were onely force infirmity or (mall offence; he doth not lay irnputat hoc ijr fall to them, nor doth he let them feele what egregious fools they tanyworgrarrde peccarurn, hoc have been. The word folly is ufed often in Scripture in this fence, enimltul;iria to note a notorious í:nne (Gen. 34.7.) when the formes of7ácob 117o11u" carne out of the field and heard how their f fter had been dealt with, then were exceedingly grieved, and they were very wrath, be caufe he had wrought folly in Ifrael in lying with 7acobs daughter ; that is, becaufe he had committed a great wickedneffe in Ifrael. We have the fame fin fo expreft again by folly (z. Sam. r 3. 1z.) Andfhe anfwered him, naymy brother, doe not force me, for no fuck thing of ht to be done in Ifrael, do not thou thinfolly; As if (he had laid ; This is a grievous fin, thereforedoe it not. And when the Lord would (hew lobs three friends, the greatneffe of their error and mitfake in theirdilpute with rob, he calls it folly (rob 42.9 ) My /ervant fob fhail pratfor you,for him will I accept left Ideal with you according toyour folly, in that ye have not i den of me the thing that ie right like my /ervant 7ob.Thus we fee that great fins whether in pratfíce or opinion come under this cenfure in Scrip- ture ; only we may note that the three texts mentioned expreffe . folly in anotheroriginal! word then the prefent text doth. There is folly enough, great folly in every the leaft fin; but great fins deferve more to beare the name of folly in their foreheads. Taking folly under this peculiar confiderationi Wemay obferve. That, u theLord in tbik life loth not purifh any, nonot the worf% of/inners, according to the jufl demerit and dimenfion of their fens, fo he purifhhethfame, whofe fins are very great, but very little.
