A good mans eye may meet with a vaine ob;ec`} , but his eye doth not goe out to leek or wait for it. Agaioft fuch wive wriekednefTT lob profefTed while he laid ( Chap, 3 t. r.) Ihave made a Covenant withmine eyes, &c. A godly mans eye bath fomewhat elfe to waite -upon, then fuch enfuaring obje&s. And the Pfalmift tells us upon what theGodly mans eye waits ( 'Pfal. r 23. z.) Behold as theeyes of fervants look lento the handoftheir Mafers, &c. fo oureyes waite upon the Lordour Goduntil he have mercy upon ups. The eye ofa Godly man waiteth to receive Good, and the eye of a wicked map waiteth to doe evill. The Adulterer bath a waiting eye, and this waiting notes three things. Firft, That theAdulterer is very diligent, and intentive to at- Leine his purpofe ; he that waites is more then awake ; lie, is not onelyawake but watchful' ; both thefe are put together ( 'Pro. 8. 34.) where thediligence oftheSaints is fpoken ofin their wait- ing uponChrift in his appoinrmen:s; Bleffed is the man that hear - eth Et, watchingdayly at my gates,waiting at the palls ofmy doors; they who waite at the pons of wifdome, that is, ofChrift, watch al/; at húgates;they watch there, and they waite there. It is pof- fible for a man to watch,as watching is only oppofed to fleeping, and yet not towaite,that is,not to be diligent or attentive upon any bufienefs,but he that watcheth, as watching is oppofed to Idling,, he is alwayes waiting as long as watching, and he cannot but be watching,who is indeed waiting. Thus the Adulterer takes much pains to obtaine his forbidden pleafures, his eye waiteth and watcheth, he is a diligent fervent or llave rather to his luft every man that commits fin, is a fcrvant to fin, and every fervent muft waites it is the dutyofa fee vant toWaite for his Lord , the adulterer waites upon his loft as upon his Lord every lull would be wa ted upon as a Lord. Saints watch at wifdómes gates, ard Waite like fervants at her ports to know her pleafure. Adulterers watch at whoredomes gates, and at her ports they wait for finfull pleafures. Secondly, To waite, implyeth the exercife of much patience : he that waiteth, expe&s long,he mutt expec`'t and flay till the op- portunitycomes, Even the wickedhave patience upon hepes ofin- joyment; And !hall rot the Godly ?
