A fhadow in Scripture is taken two wayes. Fir9,properly, for that darkentfFe which is eaufed by the interpoftion ofa thickbo- dy,between us and the Sunne. Secondly, improperly or metapho- rically, and fo that is a fhadowwhich keepes off the beate of the Sunne, or the violenceof the rain and winde ; and fo by a trope any thingof defence is called a fhadow. (7udg.g. o r 5. ) Come truff under my fbadow (laid thebramble) that is, put your felves under my prote&ion. And againe (Ifa.3o.2,3.) In the fhaddowof bit hand bathhe hid me.And (I,a.S Ihave covered thee is thefhadowofmy band;as birds cover or fhel- ter their young ones with their wings and feathers. Thus the Scripture fpeaks of afhadow. But what is the fhadowofdeath?. It is fitft, theappearance ofdeath ; fecondly,the power ofdeath. So themeaning is (as was touched before) they are as much terrified,as if death appeared to thern,as ifthe image ofdeath pal- fed before them invifion, or as lithe power of it had taken hold of them tobring them prifoners to the grave. Ifone know them, they are in the terreur ofthe fluedow of death. Ihave from the formerwords of this context, as allo at the lath verfe taken oecafion to obferve, how troublefome both the light of the Sunne and the light ofthemind are to evill men and therefore I thall not fray upon any Inftru&ions of that kinde here. Yet forafmuchas not only the murdererand adulterer, fpoken kenofbefore, but the theife fpokenofhere, are all for darkenede and concealement.
