6o6 'Chap. 24. An Expoftion typon the Book of J OB. Verf. 18. reprefented by one radicall word, and the reafon of it is, becaufe thole things that are light, or contemptible, are curled, or in a curled condition. They that honour me (faith theLord, I Sam. 2. i o) 7Will honour, but they that defpife meJhall be lightlyofeemed, or they /hall be curled. There the fame word is ufed in the Origi- nall, which in the prefent text,we tranflate curfed. To curfe a man is to flight him to the utmoft, and wenever efteeme lo lightlyor bafely ofany thingor perfon, as when we curie either the one or the other. Theirportion is Curled in the earth. 1Vtalciicere e(f But by whom are they curled ? or who cnrfeth them ? Imay levirer de al:- anfwer,They are curled both by God and man.As if yob had laid, quofenti alour their doirgs have been fuch upon the earth, that, firft, all Men bus acerbirq; curie them and fecondly,God curfeth them. Some are curled by jcommaúbrc a- men and yet God blefleth them, others are bleffed or highly e- haBurn prcici,. deru &tmed by men, yet God curfeth them. But thefemen are fuck who as they please not God, fo they are contraryto all men (as the Apoftle fpakeof tome, I The!. z. I g.) and therefore God and man joyne in their curie. Their portion is curled In theearth. That is, in all their earthly concernments , or they are curled even here while they are upon theearth, where they thinkthem- felves, and where, poffibly, fume others think them allo, molt bleffed. For though they have gotten much in the earth, orof earthly things, yet all they havegotten is curled, and therefore all that they have is curled, for they have got nothingbeyond the earth. Againe, Thefe words may be read by way of Imprecation ( we read them by way ofafTertion) let their portion be curfed in the earth; Like that (Pical. 109. 8, 9, 10, I t.) Let his dayes be few, and let another take his efface, let his children be fatherleffe, Apparzanrpan. mac. Some ofthe ancients make the Paraphrafe thus ; Let the cæ eorum japer roots ofwhat theyJew or plant appearebare in the earth , when the ten arida,i.e. root ofa tree, or the roots ofcorne appeare aboveground, both cam confeverint tree and cornemuff needs wither, for want ofmoyftureFor as the rot fuor non terra earth feeds the root, fo the root feeds the flocke, and the ftocke gr thebranches, That is a curled treewhich beares no fruit accord.
