Chap. 26. An Extofition up.n the B akcf j O B. Verf 6. affirmative. As to be asked, and to have nio covering, are the fame; fo hell and deftrxftion are the fame; and chafe tw. are often put together (Pro. 15. i t.) Hell and definit ion are before the Lord: hewmuch mere the hearts of the children ifmen ?Thoughwe know not when heil is, nor what is done there, though we know not what is become of thA that are delitroyed, nor what they fuffer, yet God cloth ; and if the ferrets of hail and deviills are known to him, then much more the fecrets of the hearts dale children of men. And as that proverb teacheth us that nothing is hid from God, becaufe hell and defttudtion are not,fo another proverb de- livered in the fame form, teachetb us, that nothing in the creature can fatisfie thedeo res and luftings of rnan even as hell and de- ftruéfion can never be fatisfied -( Pre. 27. ao.) Hell and de- fruction are neverfull : fo the eyes of men are never fatisfied. The Devil who isthe great executionerofthe wrathof God, is expref>á by this word; as hell is called deftTuition in the abftradt, fo the Devil is called a deftreyer in theconcrete (Rev. 9. I I.) And they bad a King over them which is the Angel of the bottomleffe pit (or hel) whop name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Creek tongue bath hie name Apollyon; both the one and the other, the Hebrew and the Greeke fignifie the fame thing a deftroyer TheDevil!, who is the Jaylour ofhell, is called a def$royer, ashell it felfe is called deftreeftion from the Coincidency of thefe two termes. Note. Hell is deftruttion. They that are once there, are loft and loft for ever. The reafora why hell iscalled defiruftion, is becaufe they that are cart ro hell are undone to eternity. We read of a City (Ifa. to, a.) which was called the City ofdeft-seftion, becaufe it was tobe utterly de- ftroyed ; Hell may be called a City of deftrua ion, not becaufe it frail ever he deftroyed, but hecaufe it fhall ever be full ofdeftruc. tìon,and nothing but deftrudtionBeall be there. There is no daze on earth lo miferable, but a man may be delivered out of it, but out ofhell there is no deliverance. Heman faith(P/88. I i.)Shall thy loving &indnle be declared in the grave ?,r thyfaithfulnefe in Oration ? Theregrave and deftruffion are put together, much more may hell and deftrudioo be put rogether,or for each other. What ever comer nto the grave is defiro ed,it rots and peritheth, C c c c c 2 much
