Jo6 puts the queftion (Ch. 2i. 22.) Shall any teach Clod knowledge, feting bejudgeth thofe that are high ? Now asno man can teach God tills knowledge, fo God teacheth but few men any of this knowledge, and he teacheth no man all of it. Where is that wi(dome tobe found And where is the place ofundemanding r Some diftinguilh between wifdoms and underftanding, as bt- twee') ahabit and ana& Underaanding (fay they) is the habit, andwifdom the a&, by which all things are ordered anddifpofed of according to that light, which lhineth in the underftanding. The Jewifh Do&ors call underflanding, the daughter of wifdome. But we need not be thus curious, it being frequent in Scripture to repeat the fatrie thing in another expreflion. Wherefoever wif- dom is, there isundeiHanding ; and wherefoever a right tinder- {landing is, there is wifdome : And as chete two are infeparable companions, fo they are often put the one for the other ; For though, many have anunderftanding, who have no wifdorn, or who are very unwife, yet whofoever is anunderftanding man, is a wile man all() ; or rather'his underftanding is his wifdom : and though fame critical diftin&ionmay be givenbetween them, yet bothmay bear the fame fenceand fignifcation, as elfewhere, fo in this place alfo, without any hurt or (train to jobs intention.
