Cha-p. 2S. an Expofition upon the Book of J o B. Verf. 23. yet he had muchdone upon him, and againfl him, by the wicked and unrighteous, confider (I fay) and lay all there things toge- ther)and then, 'Lis little that we know of the wifdom of God in his notices, t 'e only bear thefame thereof, but attain not to a full underfaanding and comptehenfion of it. This being taken for the interpretation of this verfe; it holds forth the fame truth with the former two, and therefore I fhall pars it by, without raffia?, any difiinet obfervations from it. The whole being but a proof and confirmationbyanother fort of witnef es, namely, all Inch as are gon out of this world, ofone fort or other, That they know no- ehing certainly of the wifdom of God, but this, that certainly, there is in him fuch an all-difpofing and over- ruling wifdom. Thus far foá anfwers his ownqueílions Negatively then cometh wifdom ? nd where is the placeofand ' whence Teeing it is bidfrom the eyes of all living, ád kept dole ff from t fowlsofthe ayr ; Deflretlion and death fay, w` have h d the' fame thereof with our ears. But in the nextverfe he fpeakes in the Affirmative. Verf. 23. God underflandeth theway thereof, andbe knowctb the place thereof. r After he had found nothing but ignorance and infufñciency- all the world over, as to this thing, and had taken the crown of this glory from off the headof men and Aogells, of the living and the dead, heenforms where and with whom this Glory refieth.. God underflands the way thereof, and heknowetb the place thereof. Some expound this,as theanrwer of def1rulion and death, which having laid, we have heard thefame thereof, feem to fay further,; If ye would know more ofus, this is all we can fay; God knows. But I rather take the words as fpoken byph. As if he bad laid ;, After allour inquiries and interrogations, the.refult ofall is this, God bathreferved to bimfel fthe realm ofall ; He underflandeth the way thereof, that is, whence it cometh, and whither it goeth ;. God underflandeth that wifdom cometh out fromhimfelf, and goeth intoman according to the meafure of his appointment and the *afore of his will. Gods underllanding of the wayof wifdom ishis nature. All the underf}anding which man hashofit, is from the free giftand grace God., 303
