Chap. 28. efln Expofation upon the Book of j o B. Ver+. 28. 379 fhoar. Secondly, the giving of rain; which is alto a common work of providence, is bath continued from the creation, and will to the diffolutionof the world ; yet we ought to fear and trem- ble before the Lord while we confider there every dayes expe- riences of his power and greatnefs. And the more fpiritual our hearts are, the more will they , be affeaed with thefear of the Lord by the fight and contemplation of thefe common providen- ces. God is the more tobe admired and feared in his doing that often or alwayes, which to doebut once callsboth for our fear and admiration. And thus we fhould reafon with our felves, what cannot God doe for us in a time of fpecial need, who at all times cloth greater things for us then any which we can-need. Every good thing is the better by howmuch the more common it is, whether as co times or perfons ; and thereforethe coma-mimes of them fhould not at all (though it often do) abate our eflima- don of theìn,or our thankfulnefs to God for them. Yet Secondly, We fhould fear the Lord more then ordinarily for and in his extraordinary providences, whether they bear the face of Judgements or of mercies. When thy lodgements are in the earth (faith theProphet, Ifa.26. 9,) the inhabitants of the world will learn righteoufnefs ; that is, they ought to doe fo, and if ever they will doe ir, they will do ir then ; and I (faith the Prophet) do even Prophefie to others, and promife tomy fell, that then they will doe it. Now, no man can learn righteoufnefs, or doe right indeed, but he that hash learned this fear of the Lord. 'Tis laid ofpi, (Chap. a, a.) That man was perf'eEIand upright (or righteous) fearing God. Judgments worke fear, and fear avorke; righteoufnefs. We mull not fport with the Judgements o God, or play withhisThunder-bolts, but tremble beforeJim (`Pfal. 55. 19.) Becaufe they have no changes, tberefore theyfear not God; that is,there's nonew thing among them, no extraordinary provi- dential turnes, no judiciary changes, their profperity keeps a fettled cou, fe ; and becaufe they find all things going on in the old courfe of providence , therefore they goe on in their old courfe of finfulnefs , they fear not God: intimating that as fucll changes always fhould, foufuàlly theydo awaken f ear : And that if the Lord would but change and wifeand tumble them abour, byvarious troublefome difpenfarions(as we have been tolled in thrs Natìon)furely they would fearhiní.The Saints in the Revela- C c c 2 Lion
