Chap. 28. a/fs Expojition e pin. the Book of J o B. Verf. 28. 383 divine worfhip ; he confidereth well what he fweareth , and keepeshimfelf dole to what he bath fworn. Holy fear examines every work , every word , yea every thought , every dingle thought (if that be poffible) much more thofe thoughts which are brought and wrought tap together into counfels púrpofes and refolutions. Holy fear examines u rff, of what fort they are, and whence they are ; it examines fecondly, whether theyare going,, and what they tend to ; Holy fear is the fouls keeper, and at bath a very quick and jealous eye upon all our wayes ; it obferves what goes in and comes out ; it is full of enquiries, about what we have done, and about what-we are doing, yea about what we purpofe to doe. He that feareth God cannot think what he ilia, nor fpeak what he lias, nor doe what he liar : he lindes himfelf under a law, and is freely fubje& ro ir. This is that fear of the Lord, of which the Lord faith unto man, The fear ofthe Lord, that ie wi[dom. H°ace we may infer. That Moral hone/ty without thefear of the Lord, id not Date wifdom. Ameer Heathen, yeaan Atheia may doe hone( and vertuouI things, even with a lovi to venue. For there is a beauty and an amabiliry in jai and righteous a&ions to theeye of natural reafon but no Heathencar, much lets can any Atheia doe that which is good and hone(inthe fear of theLord. And until a man doe good and avoides evil in this fear of the Lord, all the good he Both, as l the evil he avoides, will not prove him a tru- lywife man. Some verrues may be á&ed without thisfear, but po grace can : and the bea of chafe aerions which are done with- out this grace, will at laabe found but alining fins, and beauti- ful iniquities. And therefore Solomon concludes (Eco. 12.13. ) Fear God and keep his Commandements , for this is the whole dutyofaan; As if he had faid,if any man fhould keep the corn- mandements, and not in the fey of the Lord, he bath done but halt(at moll) of the duty of man, and nothing at all as a gracious man. And becaufe this holy-fear is fo precious ink felf, and fo rarely found among the childrenof men ; I fhall lira diïcover, where it is ; and fecondly, whence it comes to pafs, that 'ris fo rarely ,footed among them,.
