The troublesof the righte- ous are many, but their feares are few. The Prophet prefcribes this fear of the Lord as the bei medicineagainfi all other feares (I fa. 8.12, 13.) And fodot's Chrifi himfeif (Luke zz. q,, 5,): Jrfayunto you myfriends, bent afraid of them that kill the body, andafter that have no more that they can doe. But Iwill forewarn you whom youfhallfear, fear him whichafter be bath killed bath power to call into bell, yea 1 (ayunto you, fearhim. A3 if he bad Paid, as you ought not, fo if you fear God, you will not much fear man. He fearer nothing elfe, who fears that one thing, to fin ; and hefears; none elfe, who fearer that One, who is more thenAd, god. That which we tratflate, Able men (Exod._18.21.) the Geneva renders, Men ofcourage fearing Çod.Thus fear dwelswith courage, and is the fpring of it. AMagitirate fearing God will doe right and juftice, let who will be difpleafed with it, or con- cerned in it, Moli Magifirates knowwhat is right, and forme have a good mind to doe ir,but there are not a few who dare not, a Li- on is in the way ; fame are as eafily brib'd with fear, as others arc hopes, or as any are with Gifts in hand. If therebe any thing in the world,that deferves to be called cowardife,this is it; All that I fhall fay to fuch cowards (whether they be fuch as for fear forbear to doegood in wayes of righteoufnefs towards men, or inwayes of holinefs and pure Religion towards God, all that I fluff fay to them) is this, read and trembleat that which is writ- ten (Rev. 21. 8.) without are thefearful; none fhall come into Heaven but they who fear God, nor ¡ball any, who throw up their known duty for fear of man. Thirdly, Holy fear keepes the heart render and humble ; and hence we find this fear oppofed both to hardnefsand pride of heart. Bleffed is the man thatfeareth alwayes (Prov. 28. 14.. that is,who feareth alwayes to fin, and who feareth that allrimes he may be overtaken with fin, and is thereforewatchful over himfelf)but as it follows, he that hardnetbhis heart (hall fall ïns"o en:-fchief.
