Chap. 28. Aos ExpofstionvQn the Jtoolt, of Jos. Verf. 28. 39 5 is not the all that we can poflibly have in this world,.and for the next ? And is it not then our wifdom? He is a wife man that knoweth his interefl, land he is wifeft that knoweth this for his in- terefi. This was the counfelofMofes to lfrael concerning the Statutes of the Lord which he had taught them, (Dsut. 4.6 .) Keep ye therefore and do them (that is, the flamesof the Lord, to keep which is the fear of the Lord) fer this is your wifdom and underffanding in the fight of the Nations, which (ball bear all thefe flames, and fay, Surely this is a wife and underflanding people. There is nothing to be feared more then this, that we fhould fear any thing more then ï od ;and there is nothing tobe defired more then this, that we fhould fear God above all things ; For that doth not only make us wife, but is our wifdom, above all things; The fear ofthe t.ord, that is wifdom, And to depart from evil is unlerflanding. For the clearing of three words, j Chill thew three things. Firfl, VVhat is meant by evil. Secondly, VVhat it is to depart from evil!. Thirdly, How our departingfrom evil is our tenderfianding. To the firfi Query, 1 anfwer ; there are two fortsof evil. Find, Evil done. Secondly , Evil fuffered ; or according to the moft ufuall termes of diflintekion, there is the evil of fin, and the evil of, punifhment. Here in the text, when Yob faith, to depart from evil is underflaaioding , we arc to underfiand it of the evil of fin,of that evil, either done, or which we are tempted to doe. And as by ertïl we are to underfiand fin in general, fo that wemay cake the full compars of what we are to depart from ; we may confider fin under a fivefold notion. The word being indefinite, implieth a departure from evil univerfally. As Firfi, A departure from all kinds or forts of finfull evil) ; under what title or ditiinEtion foever fin appears, we mnfi depart from it, whether it be a finfull evil of the heart, or a finful evil of the hand , or a finfull evil of the tongue, whether it be a finfull evil in the omitfion of that good which is commanded, or in the commiflïon of that evil which is forbidden. VVhea the text faith, to depart from evil is underftanding, we mull underfiand Ivil in this latitude, not this or that, but every finfull evil. E e e Sc-
