(;hap 28. An Expofition ,imp theBook ofJ p B. Verf. 2S. 4o5 theblood of God, the blood of that perfon who is God bleffed for evermore could cute it, becaufe no other blood could march, much leffe overmatch the evil of it ; fin bath fo deeply indebted . us that none but Chrifi 'could fatisfie or make payment for us ; and fin bath fo deeply infested us that none but Chrifi could cleanfe us or provide a remedy for us. Lafily, we may colledt, how great an evil fin is, by what it doth both to God and toour felves. Confider fin in reference to God : and then ; firti, it dilhonours bim fin is abreach of the Law, and through breaking the Lawwe difhonour God (Rom.2.. 23, 24.) Secondly, fin is a defpìfing and (lighting, of God (r Sam. 2.30.) we, make light of his commands,. and fet at ndnght all his counfels (Pro. i. 25.) and hence thirdly, it is a provocation to God (Per. 32. 3t. Pfal. 9§. 8.) What can pro- voke God to anger, who is infinitely patient and good, but that which is extreamly evil ? Fourthly, it isaburden and a wearìnefs to God (lime:2.13..lfa. 43. 24.) yea a very breaking to God, t am broken (faith the Lord,Ex.ck 6. 9.) with their wbarifh heart, evenas a loving husband is at the difloyal carriage of an adultrous wife. All there thingsare fpoken of God after the manner of men, or of God as he became man in the perfon of the Son , to Phew how great an evil the fin of man is in the fight of God... To all which add, how ill the holy and good Spirit is treated by . fin, which is faid, firfi, to greive theSpirit (Eph. el. 3o.) fecond- ly,toquench the Spirit (iTbef.s. ig.) Thirdly,tor_efifl the Spirit. (Ass 7.: si.) Fourthly, to vex. the Spirit (lfa.63. s,.) yea, Fifthly, when hied to the bight it is a doing defpsghe to the Spirit ofGrace (Heb. a 0.29.) And whereas the evil of fin is fo great (as was (hewedbefore.) that nothing but the blood of Chrifi;` crucified could relcive us againti it ; fo force forts of fin, their fns I mean, who having!v adefont proftffionof Chrifi, apofia- tize from him and fall away, are called a crucifying ofChrifi aA frefb, and a patting him reopen Jhame (Heb. 6. 6.) that is, fuck finners do it as much min them lyes now that Chrifi is in heaven;. and wereChrifi here upon the earthagain, they would doe their atmofi to crucifie him again. That malicious Spirit poffeffeth them, which pofreffed thofe Tews, who were the very betrayers and murderers of our Lord "Jefus Chrifi. And therefore fuch by their finning are feed to bat)r trodden onelorfoct the Son of"God, eß1.1:
