Thedark0Woantains fpoken of by the Pro- phet, are not onlyproperly fuck, but figuratively fuch ; as when men are in great troubles, they eitherrun or are driven to the dark Mountaines to fhelter andhide themfelves;fo great troubles are dark Mountains ; and to Rumble upon thefe dark Moun- tains of trouble, is tobe defituteof the light of counfel what to doe, or which way to betakeour (elves for deliverance. Saul was upon fuch a dark Mountain when the `Philif#ins invaded him, and there his feet Rumbled (r Sam. 28. r5.) I am fore diflref- fed ( faith he ) for the Pbiliflinee mare war againfl me, and god is departed from me, andan foerethme nomore, neither by Pro- phet: nor by dreams. He was in darknefs, and Qodgave him no light to walk thorow that darknefs ; his darknefs was indeed turned into the fhadow of death, when be turned to the Devil to raife the dead, that he might have light. Good men are brought many times to the dark Mountaines, but their feet doe not Rumble there ; the Lord will keep the feet ofhis Saints, and they (like job) by the light of .godfhall walk thorowdarknef:. And as fuch are oppofed to thofe (v. 6.) who acknowledged God in all their wares, fo they cannot expo& (which is there promifed to them that doe fo) that be fhoulddire&l their path:. Secondly, Takeheed ye be not found walking in the light of your own comforts, as not in the light of your own counfels. Some make comforts for tbemfelves,or they kindle their own fire, as the Prophet elegantly exprefleth it (Ifa. 5o. ii.)
