Again, When he faith indefinitély, tvben the ear beard, and the eyejawme, we are to expound it univerfilly, for all cares that beard,and eyes that faro him ; As if he had Paid, every one that heard me,blef'cd me, and every one that lawme, gavewitneffe to nee. There was not any hearer but did bleffe me, nor any behol- eiler but gave wirnefs to me. Thofe words, heard me, may be taken two wayes. Firth, Thus ; Whichbeardme perfonally fpeaking. Secondly, Thus ; Whichheard me fpoken of, or my proceed- ings reported by others. But what did the ear which heard lob ? Himfelf anfwers in the Text, it bie,adme, or (as Mr. Broughton renders it)They held me happy. We read in Scripture this a& ofbleffing three wayes fpoken of. Fìrf+, Of God bleffing man. Secondly, Of man bidingGod. Thirdly, Ofman bleffingman. Here's blefiing on all hands, but with a difference. 9et benedicere Fir(i, WhenGod bleffeth, he effectually and irrefaflibly con a(¢ benefacere veighes a bleffing. He whomGod bleffeth is furely bleffed. He bath ble,jfed (faid Balsam, Numb. 23. zo.) andIcannot reverfe it. The creature cannot repeal the a&s of God ; What he will work for good or evil none can lett. Our bleífings are at the commandof God ( Pfal. 13 .3 .) There ( that is, inor upon Sion) the Lord commanded the bleffing. And again (Pfal.4z.8. ) The Lordwill command his loving kindnefs, that is, theeffects and fruits ofhis love to fall upon me. The Lord doth not Hand treat- ing about or entreating for a bleffing upon us ; he can lay his charge or command upon it, and it obeyeth. As he is able to curie our bleflings (Mal, 2. 2 ) fo to biefs the very curfes which men caH upon us.
