Chap. sg. z/flII Expofation upon the Book, of J o B. Verf, 2. g13 Re fpake of his righteous ails, not as reaing upon his own righ- teoufnefs, but to thew forth the fruits of a true faith, or that his faith had more in it then a verbal profeflion,- So much of the general Elate and fcopc of thefe words; now so the particulars. V'erf. i 2. Becaufe I have delivered thepoor that cryed. Here we have the poor in their word condition , the poor crying ; and here we have the Magifirate in his bell condition, the Magi(4ratedelivering. 'Tis a fad hearing, though very ufual, to hear the poor cry ; and 'cis a bleffed fight, but not very ufual, to fee the Magitirate delivering; and though this text thews us that blefled fight, the Magifirate delivering the poor, yet is doth not thew us either from whom or fromwhat the poor were de- livered. And fo the quetrion is, fiat, from what ; fcondly, from whom fob delivered the poor ? I anfwer both, firtl, in general ; He delivered them ,from evil men, and from .evills of any kind. Secondly, more cfpecially he delivered them from oppreffors, and their opprefsions of every kind. The Septuagint render ir, Becaufe Idelivered the poor out of the band of the mighty, or out of the hand of the ftrong, who did overpower, , and fo opprefs them. I delivered thepoor that cryed. David fpeaking of his enemies (Tfal, IS. 45, ) faith, Theycryed, bat there was none to lave them, they cryedeven to the Lord, buthe anfwered them not; then did Ibeat them as final as daft before the wind , I did call' them out as the dirt in the greets. Such was the cry of the poor to Job, they were cruelly dealt with ; the proud were ready to beat them to duff, and to tread them under foot as dirt. As when a Peirce and greedy Lyon bath fafinesi on his prey, the poofcreature cryes out being ready to be torn in peices ; fo the poor cry out for the help- of Juftice, when thefe "cruel Lyons have got them into their claws. Thus David defcribes the oppreffor ( Pfal. so. 6, g; to.) He f ttetb in the larking places of the villages, in the fe.. cret places doth he murder the innocent : bin eyes are privily, jet a gainff the innocent. Ile lye,tb in wait, fecretly ae a Lyon in bee den : 'V u be
