Chap. 29. an Expofition upon the Book of f ;o B. Z. S and him that bath none tohelp him. We have a threefold obje& of jobs compafsion, and of h'is Juftice ; for though julfice belongs properly to the Magi:ìrate, yet a temperament of difcreet pity is ufeful for him in his place, efpe- cially for the fpeeding of delivering JuRice (which is exercifed towards this threefold object in the text) firft, the poor ; fecondly, the fatherleffe ; thirdly, him that bath none to helpbiro. And this laft is the faddcft cafe of the three. It is laid of that gre at Prince, whofoever he was , 4fter hehad made many fpoyls in the Nati- ons (Dan. It. 4v.) yet be[hall come to his end, and none' (ball kelphim ; coat is,ihough he bath manyhelpers, yet none (hall be sb.e to help him. Now as that man is in a miferable Rate, whom none ha71 help, though they endeavour it ; fo alfo is he who hath none, who will to much as try or endeavour to help him. Some are poor who yet have many to help them; fome, ere fatherleffe, yet slot belpleffe. The latter of the three is both, and more then both the former two ; yet as in Scripture the poor and fatherleffe are the fame, fo either or both are the fame with the helplefie. (Pfal. ro. 14.) The poor committeth bimfelf to thee, these art the helper of the fatherleffe. As fob in his Magifiratical capacity Rood in the place of God, fo he acted like God towards the people; I (faith he) delivered the poor that cryed, the fatherleffe, and bit,' that had none to help him. As if he had faid, Ifany complained to me of wrong, who was poor, orfatherleffe, or helpleffe, j was a freind andFather and helper tohim, Iwas at hand to doe ihim right ; 1did not refpet the perfens ofmen, but their caufe; whofoever wanted, de- fired, and deferved my help, bad it, and they moll, wbo(as to the ma- king ofanyreturn to me) coulddeferve it leaff, Job exercifed his power eminently towards chofe three, who were obje &s of his pity, as well as of hisJuftice, The porr, the fatherlefe, and him that had none to help to him. But did not fob exercife Juf}ice towards all ? did he not help the rich as well as the poor, the fatherleffe, and him that had no helper ? Doubtleffe he did ; but becaufe that's the fpecial work of aMagiftrate, and Magiftrates are ufually backward to help the -helplefs ; - therefore he names them. The rich bath many Pawls (Troy. r4. lo) or as the Margin reads it,til(any are the lovers of the ricb.Yea the rich man bath a kind of command upon Magifirates V u u z and
