Chap. 36. As Expolition upon the Books of J o E. Verf. 25. 215' Apoftle ? As togive others real reliefe will not hinder our pro- fit, fo to give them (as tobodyly wants ) only a verbal! rebefe, doth not profit them. Solomon faith ( Pro. 22. 9.) He that bath a bountiful! eye, (hall be bleffed ; for he giveth ofhis bread to the poore. He doth not fay, he (ball be bleffed, becaufe, be giveth good words to the poore, ( wee may be bountiful! of them good cheape, and the poore ftarve for all that bounty) but he that giveth his bread to the poore 'hall be bleffed ; for he indeed is a blef- fng to the poore. Againe,Solomon doth not fay,He that interro- gates the poore,& put queftions to thern, how theycarne by their poverty (fome when the poore addrefl.é to them for tome fupply oftheir wants, make it their bufiines toquery what brought them into want ; which is as if a man being fallen into a pit of water, the next paffenger hearing his out.cry for helpe, fhould only asks him how fell you in ? but never lend him a hand, or ufe any meanes to draw him out, (I fay, Solomon doth not fay, he that queftions the poore how they came by their poverty) (hall be bleffed, but he that giveth ofhis bread to the poore. Our ver- bal camnafonsof the poore, are poore thing; , and our tearer but dr: things, unleffc we give them bread. Theheart of Chrift was full of trouble for us that were ficke and in trouble, but he flayed not there, he cooky care todeliver us out ofour troubles, to cure us of our fickneffes, and to make us happy for ever. The Apofllé minds us of thefe real! compaffions ofChrift to make us really compaffionate, (2 Cor. 8 9,) Tee know the grace ofour Lord 7efus Cbrifl, that though he was rich, yetfor yourffks he became poore, that yet thorow his poverty might be rich ; He Cid not only pity us in our poverty ; but Cooke a courle to makeus rich, and to fet us up in a good and plentifull efface againe. And he was filled to fuccour us inour fufferings by a fence of his owne tufferings. ( Heb.2. 18. ) For in that he bimfelfe bathfuf. fered, being tempted, hee ie able'to fuccour them that are tempted. Jefus Chrift bath tranfferred all our fuiferings to thimfelfe , and fo giveth us helpe in our wants through a fenceof what him. felfe once wanted and fuffered. This the Apoftle had afligued as the reafon why he fubmitted to a (utteringcondition, (v. 17. ) wherefore in all things it behaved him tobe made like untohis bre- thren , that he might be merciful! high Priefi in thingspertain- ing to God, to make reconbiliationfor thejinxes ofthe people.
