Secondly Obferve ; Ply.e may be called brethren and companions of chofe whofe manners and ethons wee immitate, what though wee arenot at all akinne to them, or in company with them, yet wee aYe their companions and brethren when we do or filer like them. Wee are like to every thing which wee imitate, whether it he good or bad. As Chrift toldrome of the Jewes, the Devil was their father becaute they walked in his wayes, and refembled him in their wakes ; fo we maycall any one a mans &other whole wortces he reiembleth. Solomon gives us this in a full affertion, (`pro.13, 20.) He that walkethwith wife men dhall be wife ; tut a cempani- on of foolesfdsall be deftroy'd. To walke with them is not to take a turne with them in the fields, or barely to goo in company with them when andwhether they goe ; but to walke with the wife, is to follow their example and to tread the fame pathes of ifd :>me which they tread.Tbey who thus walke with wife men, a:tine to wifdome, and prove wife men themfelves. And when S.lo.non adds, A companion offouler /hall be detroy'd ; his mean- ing is not,that every one that is in the company ofa bole (hall be detiroyed, but he that cenformes to them and takes up their fool;2 =. fafl;ions ; He that is or doth like a fool,, is properly a looks companion, and only he. In which fence Solomon fpeaks againe, ( 'Pre. 28.7. ) Who fo keepeth the Law it a wifefan, but het that is a companion ofriorrats men ( that is, he that doth filet riotous men) thorned" hit Father; Hee thatdoth like a Dragon is Brother to a Dragon, and hethat loth likean owle, is a com- panion of owles.
