3 1 o Chap.31. .dn Expofition upon the Book of Jo$. Verf.2. There is tome cri icall difference in Law , between a portion and an inheritance. A portion in that ftriánefîe confifs of Mo- ney or Moveables,or, as Lawyers fpeake,of goods and chattel's. An inheritance is of houfes and lands, lob in eyther word (1 fup- pole) includes both, and fo there is no difference between there in the mindof this Scripture. what inheritance of the 4 lmighryfrom on high ? This Title, or name of God Shaddai, rendred Alvighty, bath been opened more then once before ; I flash only ardde here; The Almighty is he who lath all things in his hand ; and there- fore he can giveas great portions, and as large inheritances as he pieafeth ; He is infinitely full in himfe!'e, yea he is infinitely full of himfelfe; And the earth is his with the fullnes of ir,yea heaven with all the fullnes and furniture of it is his. But what inheritance of the Almighty is there toungodly men , eyther in heaven or earth ? eyther from below, or from on high ? The queltion mull be refolved into This negativepropofidon; There is no inheritance of the Almighty from on high to that raceor generationof men. The words are plaine and need no further labour of an exposition ; yet there is a threefold appre- henfonabout the (cope and purpole ofthem.` Firft, Some underftand them thus ; what portion of Cod is e erefrom above;, and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? As if 7.6 had complained, that notwithftanding all his care to preferve himfelfe cleaneand pure, both in heart and life, notwithftandingall his circumfped walkings, and holy watch- fullnes, yet he found that God had not bef'owed a- portion of good, but ofevill upon him, and that ( as he fpaké,Chap 7. 3.) The Almighty had made him inherit or poffeffe nothing but tvearifome nightsand moneths ofvanity. Thus yob is fuppo`ed cx- pnffing his grievance . what recomppence have Igotten ofGodfor zsy chaffity but .chafiifements, I have not feofered'mine eyes io glancewantonl, jet < seer from the hand of G0,d as if l" mere famefilthy wanton, -or debauch: adulterer.
