Chap; 3 a. An Expoftiou upon the Books of Jo B. Vert. 4. is amiffe. For as the fame Solomon tells us ( Pro. r 5. 3. ) that the eyes of the Lord are in every place, bebolding the evaand thegood ; fo he beholdeth the good to reward it , and the evill to pu- t ills it. Hence take thisCorolary, God whofeeth and takes an account of all our wayes andReps, will certainly punifh thefe who take a liberty to ftep oat of thoje wayes, which hitnfelfe bath chalkedout, and commanded us to walke in. IfGoddid not fee our wayes, we might fin and got utìpuni- fled , but forafmuch as-hee feeth themwith purer eyes then to behold iniquity and approve it, he is engaged both in juíl,ice and honour to punifb all that iniquityofour waves which hee teeth or beholdeth.David makes this the very defigne ofGods fuper intendency over the wayes of men (Pfal. Io. i4.) Thou haft feene ir; for thou beholder mifchiefeandfpite to requite it with thy hand ; the pore committeth birnfelfe unto thee , thouart the helper of thefatherleff `e. Thus the Pfalmift reprefents the Lord as having taken a view or furveighofthewayes of men, Thou haft feene, what had God feene ? even all that wickednes and oppreffion of the Poore fpokenof in the former part ofthe Pfalme, as alto the blafphemy of the wicked againft himfelfe. (v. r 3.) wherefore doth the wicked contenant Clod ? hee bathlaid in his heart, thou wilt net requite it. What faith the Pfalmift concerningGod, to this vaine, confident man ; Thou ( faith he) beholtieft mifchiefe and fpite, but to what purpofe ? the next words tell us that , to re- quite it with thyhand. As thou heft feene what mifchiefe they have done fpitefully, fo in due time thou wilt requite it righte- oufly. The Lord is not a bare fpecâator, he is both a rewarder, and an avenger. Therefore from the ground of this truth, That the Lord teeth all our wayes, and counteth all our fleps, we (as the Prophet exhorts (Ifa. 3. to, I I. ) may fay to the righteous, that it (hall be well with them, for they full Bate the fruit of their doings. We mdy alto fay, woe unto the wicked, it j7oall be ill with him, for the reward of bit bands pia/i begiven bim. Only Idols, which haveeyes and fee not, have hands and flrike not. Thirdly, This truth, it feemes was much upon ?obs fpirit; For he fpeakes it or brings it in with an emphaticall quicknes not hefee my wales ? V ix Hence 329
