Chap. 3 r. :4r. expofition upon the 'Book of J o B. Verf. 7. Her wayes ( that is, the wayes ofwifdome faith"Solomon, Pro. 3. i. ) are wayesofpleafantneffe, andall her paths arepeace ; that is, they yeeldus much fweete peace and foule pleafure in the ve- ry a& of walking in them, and theywill yeeld us much more in the iffueor endof them, though in fome fence they areendlefTe. By.wayes, and wrongwayes, may pleafe a while; yet alwayes at laf4, and ofren at prefent they are troublefome and toylefome wayes, they are bitternes in the end. 7het art wearied in the greatnes ofthy wayes, faith the Prophet (Ifa 57. 10.) Worldly mete areoften wearied in their way, and they will be weary, of their wayes, whenonce they fee eyther what indeed they are, or whether they lead them,A goodman may be wearied in his way, but he fhall never be weary ofit, both becaufe he knows his way is good, and the end of it is better. His way is good, and his way , is pleafant, and thereforechiefly p!eafant to him becaufe'tisgood. Fifthly This way,the wayof righteoufneffe and ho!5 nes is a cleane way ; The wayesof fin are dirty wages he that walkes in them doth at once defile and deftroy himfelfe. Saints are therefore undefiled in the way ( Pfal. 119. t.) becaufe the way wherein they walke is undefiled. And as they are deane wayes, fo they are cleanfing wayes too, and the farther or longer we walke in them, the cleaner flail webe. Secondly , Obferve. Sinne is a turning out of the way. David confeffed his fins under the metaphor of wandrinPs (7)[al. t 19. 176.) 1havegone affray like a Jheepe that is loft. A goodman goeth fometimes out ofhis way, but all the goings ofa carnal man are out of the way, he is alwayes wandering, for he is alwayes finning ; what is finning, but wandering'? andwhat is wandering, but going out of the way. Avd j man it carefull not togee out of the way ; he prayeth earccflly (as David did. Tfal. 1 19. 10. ) O let one not wander from thy ccmwnandesrrcr.ts. But a carnal! man is willing to goe out of the Way, and b `his good will (indeed his had will ) hewoi !d .1wayes g.ne out 6f the way; and therefore the Prophet faith of Inch (7er. 14..10. ) Thos have they loved to wandr, they have not refcaii-ed theirfate. No man loves togoe out of the way to his eat thly.home, but how few ofthofe who pretend a love to heaven as their home, love 359
