508 Chap. 3 r. An Expofttion upon the Boolte of J o a. Verf.23. God is often in Scripture called,Thehigh god,the mill high God, and unto God highnefs and power properly belong ; power and highnefs are originally and fundamentally in God : all the power and highnefs that are in the creature, fl :w forth and arederived from him. As God is the fountaine of all the Goodnes, foof all the Greatnes that is in man. There are high ones among men, but highnefs is the Lords, yea the High ones are theLords ; He conttitutes them, andhe rules themat his pleafure, & for his plea- lure. (Pfal. 13 5.5.) Oar God is above all gods. There aregods man.y, and Lords many, as the Apofile fpeakes (a Cor.8.5 ) that is (as himfelfeexplaines it) there are many that arecaged rods. All Magi Pirates are called Gods ; and God gives them leave to weare that title, yea himfelfe bath put that titleupon them ; yet to us t kern is but one g,d, thefatber of whom are all things, andwe by him. The God ofHeaven is infinitely above all the gods of the earth, Kingsand Princes ; And what is the Highnesof 'dolls, or dung-hill gods to him, when the gods upon the throne areno- thing unto him ? Our Cod is above all gods : or, as Solomon ex- pre ft it ( Eccl. 5. 8.) He is higher, then the bigbell. As in na- ture there is nothing Greater then the Greatefi,fo none Higher ekes the H:ghefi. There is no degree beyond the fuperlative. This mox:me holds univerfally in things ofthe fame kinde; But there may be fomewhat of one kinde Greater then the Greateft and hf gher then the Higheft of another kinde. There is no man Higher then the Higheft man , But God is infinitely Higher then the Higheft of men. Yea as all the wifdorne ofman is folly to the wifdumeof God and all the ftrength of man weaknefs to the ftrength ofGod ; fo the Highnes of the Higheft men is !owners and bafenes to the Highnes of God.This fuper-fuperlative High- tiersof God appeares, kìrft, In the extent of his jurifdietion. The foveraignty of God hath no bounds nor limits it reacheth to all places, and ro all times ; men who havegreat power in fòme place, havenone in other places : men, who are high at one time, are low at another time ; but the Lords highnefs and power are alike at all tines, and in all places. ThouLord ( faith the Prophet, Tfat. 92.8. ) art moll High for evermore. Secondly , Thishis Hgghnefs appeares in the abfoluteneffeof his jurifdietion; he governes by no law but his will, nor Oahe by
