So then, 'cis not the poffeffingor having ofriches which renders the rich mans cafe fo difficult, but trotting in them ;'cis hard for any rich man, but 'cis impoffibie for a rich man trufting in riches to enter into the kingdome ofGod:and I may fay from Scripture grounds, 'cis impoflìhle for any man who bath riches not to troll in them, but by the grace and power of God. Judge then how prong lob was in the graceofGod, who could fay, that hehad never iayd to the fine gold, Thou art my Confidence. Nor doth ?ob difclaìme confidence in gold only becaufe it is avanity toconfide in ir, but alto becauÇe'tis bale, exceedingbale to confide in it, Hence note. Conftdencc in Gold embafeth the mind ofman, or nothingmakes the f ulefo droffie as confidence in fine gold. Yea, as confidence inGold abafeth the mindof man, fo it abet- firth (in mans thoughts) God himfelfe. God is title or nothing to them, who have an over-great efteeme ofGold. They have low and poore thoughts ofGod, who have high thoughts of riches ; yea they thinke the All.fufficiency of God too lisle for them, who 'cokeupon any creature as fufficient for them. Againe He that makes gold his confidence, is confident i.fhe have gold enough he (hall doe well enough without God. He fra ie believes that he bath any need of or dependance upon God, when once he fees himfelfe above dependance upon man. How great a wickednes is it for a man to rob the living God of that which is his greateft honour, and give it to a liveleffecrea- ture. As hope,foconfidence much more, is proper to God. God will doe nothing for us , un'effe we make him our confidence. And the creature will be nothing tous, if we make it our confi- dence. From the whole matter take thefe two inferences. First Of hewexcellent a fpiric are they, who while (lilk 70b) they have the cream ofthe creature, and all the contentments of the world courting them dayly, the recke powring themout rivers of o} le, &c. Yet keepe the worldat a dire diftance,and ne- ver make the heft of it, the leaft of their hope, nor the All of it any of their confidence ? how cleane doe luch keepe their hearts from
